Freezes 'n' furloughs: Why we're holding our breath

"The nation's economic recovery still appears inconsistent and unsure."

-- USA Today Publisher Dave Hunke, in today's memo to the paper's 1,000-plus employee workforce, disclosing another round of unpaid furloughs and a 90-day extension of a year-long wage freeze.

  2. I work at another Gannett paper. Frankly, I'm tired of hearing the justification for furloughs. What I'd like to hear is upper management taking a cut like we are being forced to do. Our furloughs put us in a position where we can't pay our basic bills, have to choose between that and food on the table. Let's see a similar situation forced upon upper management. Only when they are forced to deal with that situation will I ever not look at their "things stink so we're gonna stick it to ya" memos with anything other than passionate loathing ever again. Do thinks stink? Let's see YOU guys deal with it like we have to!

  3. Heard it thru the grapevine from a friend still at Gannett (I was laid off last summer) that furloughs are here! Come and get them while they last, and they will last.

  4. Maybe the coach will give up part of his salary like the Saints coach.

  5. It became pretty obvious to me when Hunke made that statement that we would be stuck with the pay freeze and more furloughs. I'd love to be wrong, but ...

As a former Gannetter, my position was eliminated in July 2009, I am tired of hearing how upper management uses the furloughs as vacations while the rest of us had to scrimp and save to survive. I am still pi$$ed about not getting a raise for a year and then being tossed away like garbage.

  7. Think about this... The furlough program has worked so well for Gannett, that I can see the day when they tell us paid vacations are no longer part of the benefit's package. No low is low enough for Gannett.

Ditto!!! Glad I'm out of there, My position was also eliminated in July 2009. I saw it coming for weeks, thanks to this blog and had my box packed the day after the memo from corporate. I left with a smile on my face and though times are tough (still unemployed) I'm much better off emotionally & psychologically. They did me a favor, the only one in 14 years!
