Montgomery | As presses close, a new site surfaces

U.S. newspaper division President Bob Dickey says eight papers are expected to lose their presses this year, as Gannett outsources more printing to other papers owned by GCI or other companies. There's been debate about whether the actual number will be much higher. Now, comes Anonymous@1:08 p.m. today, who says Gannett's Montgomery Advertiser is negotiating with the Birmingham News, owned by Advance Publication, for printing -- eliminating all production jobs.

Can anyone confirm -- and add detail? Is your site on the outsourcing list? Please post your replies in the comments section, below. To e-mail confidentially, write jimhopkins[at]gmail[dot-com]; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the rail, upper right.

  1. I'm surprised they aren't sourcing it to Nashville. (Only half sarcastic.) We seem to be printing everything else.

With a quarter of the staff and old presses.

  2. Montgomery just rebuilt all their presses the last couple of years spending a fortune. What a waist.

Gannett is also changing it's emphasis from the future of online back to print. Sounds like they are very confused about what they are doing.

All the sales managers at Montgomery left and the sales staff is hurting, not making much if anything toward the bottom line.

  3. I was told just last week that the printing of the Montgomery Advertiser will not be outsourced to Birmingham after all. They will begin printing the Columbus,Ga newspaper.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
