Yesterday's 7.0 earthquake struck at 5 p.m. ET -- same as in Haiti -- giving Gannett's East Coast newspapers less time to grasp the magnitude of the story than West Coast papers. Even so, Florida Today managed to get a local-angle story out front (see, arrow, above) in today's print edition.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
