Fame | Be careful what you wish for

"I thought I wanted to be famous. And I achieved a small measure of that. But fame can kill."

-- Gannett Blog Publisher and Editor Jim Hopkins, in "Delivering the inside scoop on Gannett," a new interview with Media Life, a trade publication for media buyers and planners.

  6. The real point is, is that jim got us talking to each other. No matter what his resources are or his goal, we are still here and we are supporting each other. Some things we just need to let go, and this is one of them. It doesn't matter what Jim's goals were. We are not here for Jim. We are here for each other. Once you realize that, it will erase all the hate you feel. We are here for you too, if you need us.

My point was that Jim is not risking his life here. He runs a piddly blog that apparently is too much for him to handle, and he makes it sound like he's discovered a cure for cancer AND the common cold.

His behavior at the shareholder meeting showed him for what he really is - a gadfly. And one with enough money to go AGAIN to Spain this summer. Know when the last time I went on a real vacation like that was? Wasn't even this millennium.

He has money somewhere but has been begging all of us for support. For what, exactly? Bodyguards, cross-country plane trips to settle personal vendettas, and now Spain - again.

I'm shocked anyone here still supports him. Damn, I sent the dude money because I believed in him, but he's really let us down.

Go again and call me a "corporate hack" or whatever you want, Jim. It's a good shield for any criticism of you - and in this case, it's totally not true. I'm just a guy out here in the hinterlands who thought you were on our side, but it turned out you were using us to play out your own petty revenge.

  9. Well, Jim, I leave a comment critical of the on-line publication you reference and you censor my remorks. I didn't say anything really bad and didn't use foul language. The only thing I can surmise is that you did not like my comments because they hit too close to home.

This is censorhip in its purest form. For that I despise you.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
