  5. The economy sucks, the publishing industry sucks, blah, blah, blah… and we're all looking for someone to blame for our misery. But it seems we're not the only ones in the furlough business.

    I was already aware, for example, that Honda plants have been on a 4-day workweek since earlier in the year. I just read more interesting facts in the current issue of The Economist:

    • The city of Chicago is making all their employees take 10 unpaid days between now and 12/31.
    • New York City is preparing to eliminate 3,800 jobs (far more than Gannett eliminated).
    • Atlanta is preparing to make all employees go to a 36-hour workweek for all employees, including police, effectively cutting 24 workdays or 12 workdays if you only begin counting the first of July.
    • Los Angeles is laying off 1,200 workers and enforcing 26 furlough days. Up to 2,800 union employees could be fired unless they make concessions.

    That's why it always amazes me when commenters vilify Gannett management. I know many things suck about this company; however, I know many things suck about most companies and I also know my Mother was right when she reminded me "...the grass isn't greener on the other side." If it were greener, the complainers on this site would be working at those other companies and be so happy they wouldn't give a rat's ass about Gannett.

    I guess my point is that many posters here fail to use reason when they comment. Most are upset about one thing or another and probably rightly so. Unfortunately, most that are upset want someone or something to blame and, as often is the case, it's just a matter of "shit happens."

    There is usually no one to blame, not even themselves.

  6. So my New York Times this morning has a little box that says newsstand price will go to $2 from $1.50 starting on Monday.

    They must have that wrong. Didn't some near-sighted idiot here say it was USA TODAY that was going to $2???

    Crowd sourcing.

    Books have been written, journalists without jobs (is that like doctors without borders), have been lecturing newsrooms that "network journalism" is the future ...

    The Gannett Blog (remember that?), has been one of the foremost examples of crowd sourcing. And if you really look at what's been sources here, most of it has been blind. Like that guy at the 7-11.

  7. To 9:16am... you are correct, but the problem is systemic. Case in point... Bob Nardelli screws up Home Depot and makes millions as the CEO. Then he goes to Chrysler and takes that into bankruptcy, while he gets rich. Now he goes back to Cerbrius. Somehow the worthless in corporate America manage to stay on top and wealthy while screwing over the people that actually work. And THAT is Gannett's business model... and THAT is what's wrong!

    Trust me as a person that bitched adn then left on my own to a new company, in gannetts case the grass usually really is greener. Gannett and newspapers in general are now a really crappy place to work. Yes you can find a lot more crappy places to work but that doesnt change the fact that Gannett and newspapers are very crappy too. I can tell you this, i looked for about 8 months and turned a few jobs down till i found the right one. Now that i have been there since jan 1 of this year i can truly tell you that its an amazing place to work. I would like to end by saying, "If you work in IT at gannett and dont leave you are crazy! You can do IT at any company, so why would you do it at a dieing industry and company. Gannett wants to turn into new media company but look to see how many programmers they are hiring? Last i heard was a 30 grand a year web programmer in florida. If you are IT in gannett you are either, A: no talent and cant get another job B: Too scared to make a change, or C: Without a clue!
    To you all with newspaper specific jobs. Yikes! This pay for the web crap wont work. You really think i will subscrib for a web site that tells me what is going on in my local pta and city council meetings? Yea right, people wont pay a subscription or micro payment for that crap. Adveritsing? Classifieds gone! Autos going fast or gone! The list goes on and on. Even this blog is in decline and ending. And 50 year old copy editors? I am sorry for you.

    To sum up. With Gannett neither an employee nor a invester be!!

    The grass IS greener and taller and sweeter on the other side of the fence if you are confined to an overpopulated pasture that has been grazed to a nub or bare dirt.
    This is a metaphor for Gannett, as far as I'm concerned.

    USA Today has a cover story in its money section today that was reported entirely on Twitter. Reporter Del Jones asked CEOs to comment on whether the country is drifting toward a European style of capitalism. Their responses are reproduced in the staccato shorthand that Twitter’s 140 character limitation imposes. Absent from the discussion are the founders of Twitter - Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone - who failed to respond to numerous tweeted requests. Of course, with more than 2 million followers between them, they’re probably busy.

  15. Jersey Confidential may be gone but its spirit lives on. Just take a look at the Courier News the past two days.

    Yesterday a story was printed twice -- big headline and all -- in A section. The story: Kidnapped woman freed by pizza deliveryman. The woman was from Atlanta and she was freed in Tennessee. D'oh!Today a story is printed twice, once in Daily Briefing (2 grafs) and again in A section (with big headline). The story: Dozens of whales shot to death in South Africa. Duh.Sports section yesterday: Sports on TV listings -- so the C-N can say it's just like the Star-Ledger and NYC papers -- not localized at all. The Mets and Yankees games were not included. WTF?Sports section today: Full page of canned features on baseball (duh), a college basketball scandal (which the C-N missed earlier in the week) and Mike Tyson (duh). The C-N must be waiting for the press release before they report about Rutgers being tipped to join the Big Ten.

  16. Hmm. Many here complain about the furloughs.. Isn't it 1 week off a quarter? Try having to take every 3rd week off with no pay like my husband is. The newspaper industry isn't the only one that is suffering. And what do you do? You do the best you can and deal with it.

    As a side note I left Gannett over 5 years ago because I saw the writing on the wall.

    I thought you editorial tupes were supposed to be smart. This have been the way the wealthy have managed to run things for eons. You said it is a systemic problem and you are right. Gannett is part of the system just like every other company our there. I can't think of another NYSE company that doesn't operate like this. Name one.

What people fail -- again and again and again -- to understand is that the reason the furloughs within Gannett piss so many people off is the reason behind them: Furloughs and layoffs are being handed out in Gannett to line the pockets of a CEO, CFO and board of directors, as well as to attempt to maintain profit margins that, while once were unreasonable, are completely impossible in this current economy and more than likely will never be seen again.

    When I'm having to decide which bill not to pay this month because assholes like Craig Dubow are taking cash bonuses, it totally pisses me off. And for any other industry where the fat cats at the top are profiting on the blood of the average person, those people should be pissed off, too.

    Paycuts, just cut my wrist why don't you?! I make so little as it is and I will be starting my 15th year in June. Give me a damn break. I rather have another furlough week and collect unemployment for it, rather then a paycut!

  39. What's frustrating to me is that the furloughs are the latest step in a blind flurry to cut costs by any means possible. Were it a case of the company needing the furloughs to keep the company viable, people would understand that. But that's not the case. All the furloughs have done is fatten profits. Meanwhile, the quality of work has been suffering. There just aren't enough people to make sure everything gets done and done right. Many key support people are unreachable when they are needed the most, thanks to the furloughs. People that are in charge of taking care of specific customers are often out on furlough, leaving sales people to cover who don't know the client or understand how to work with a particular customer. The furloughs have been good to the shareholders, but they have not been good to the product, and people are noticing. Friends and family ask me quite a bit why this is messed up in the paper, or that story is wrong, or how come this story wasn't covered when the other news outlets in town had it covered.

    Another source of frustration is that the company keeps talking about transformation, but it seems to be a situation where they are cutting, cutting, cutting in order to continue doing business as usual. We understand that times are rough. We understand that newspapers as we know them are going out the door and that things are changing fast. But this should be a time where the best of the company finally gets noticed. The people who are dedicated to the product and the customers, and who are the best able to adapt to the changing times should be the ones who are getting heard. Instead we're seeing the same people who just show up, put in 8 hours and go home, not caring about how much they got done or how well they did it, be the ones who are faring better. (This isn't older workers vs. younger workers; I've seen 40 year vets of the company who have been there that long because they were able to adapt, and often took a leadership role when changes were afoot. I've also seen hotshot 20-somethings that figured anything tough was someone else's problem. And vice versa.) Gannett could be reinventing itself on the fly with some of their current workers who are not only ready, but eager to take on the challenges. Instead they are clinging to the old model that once - but no longer - delivered obscene profits. To do it, they're cutting positions and content, instituting furloughs, sending jobs overseas, and taking a one-size-fits-all approach to the news product through consolidation to continue doing business the way they always have. I'm doing the best job I can out of pride, but it feels futile when the company sees you as a cost that could be cut instead of an asset that brings a lot of value to the product.

  42. If you really want to make your point compare real numbers. If your point is that the executives make so much more money than do you and it doesn't hurt them, perhaps they live well within their means. It's all relative. They don't live pay check-to-pay check - do you? Some of the rich do (atheletes, lottery winners) and they often run out of money.

    Your furlough for two weeks costs you 3.846% of your anual salary. If I understand it right, Gannett executives did take some pay cuts in terms of bonus and they are also taking furloughs with the resulting salary reduction. You are both making 3.846% less and actually, those making $90,000/year or more are taking three total furloughs this year plus the additional reduction in incentive.

    Following this line of reasoning, you have never been happy that top executives make so much more money they do you. Going a step further, you will never be happy. Why don't you start a coup or revolution against the wealthy? Create your own little version of the Animal Farm but call it the Gannett Farm. Then, you can weasel your way to the top.

    I'm not saying any of this is right. I am saying this is the way it has always been and unless you find a way to run the show, learn how to deal with it.

I agree with 8:52, plus, I just had breakfast with an Arizona Republic person on furlough who doesn't understand how they're running ads in the paper announcing readership and Sunday circulation increases yet she's on furlough and the work environment continues to decline. A Sr, VP wins a ring, everything according to the newspaper is looking great yet they're suffering with no hope in sight.

  49. To all who ask about Q3 furloughs, who knows with Gannett? My bosses are sick about what the furloughs have done to morale and the quality of the newspaper. But that won't change marching orders from on high. I can't figure how we'll get all the vacation in around furloughs, especially in the summer, if we have to go through it again.
    But what quicker way to save $20 million a quarter?

  50. Wowwww. The empty suits at GCI and the mean-spirited blog readers have won. Amazing. It's almost sad coming here now. The site has become irrelevant and fighting the good fight has ended it appears. No real info anymore. No scoops. No news we can use. The comments that once illuminated many of the problems workers had with this company have all but gone. But I believe that with all the disgruntled ex-Gannett employees, someone else will take the torch and run even faster and smoother with it. This company has gotten away with too many evil things for too long for the cause to end here, this way, on this blog. I hope someone with similar journalistic skills can restart what Jim tried to build here. And this time, figure out a way to weed out the personal attacks both against the blogger and some of the people within the company. There are so many ethical and professional infractions within Gannett/USA TODAY that it never should have to get personal. Plenty of legit things to focus on. We have morons on all levels, running departments and not having a clue as to what they are doing. We have petty leaders who manage based on revenge, arrogance and/or insecurity. We have incompetent employees who remain a drag on all of us while good people leave the company. So much to write about, so hopefully we don't waste time on the next blog with gay bashing and other stupidity that really has nothing to do with the ills and sins or Gannett and USA TODAY. Maybe the next blogger won't have to sacrifice their mental well-being to do something that is such a benefit for the majority of GCI employees. Maybe the next blogger can elevate the awareness of not only the big problems that exist here, but also the day to day issues that slowly bleed us to death.

"Secret" Meeting of News Execs and Lawyers a JokeSaturday 30th May 2009 09:21:09 PDTBlog post: Although reports of newspaper execs holding a "secret meeting" to discuss how to charge for their online content were circulating here and there around the Web yesterday, there was, in fact, nothing particularly secret about what actually occurred. Senior execs from most major U.S. newspaper companies, including Hearst, Gannett, Scripps, The New York Times, the Media NewsGroup, the AP and McClatchy did indeed meet under the auspices of the Newspaper Association of America in Chicago on Thursday to explore "Models to Lawfully Monetize Content." The AP reported the story. A bunch of would-be saviors for the embattled industry, including some of the usual suspects, were on hand as well. Steven Brill and cronies got on the agenda to present their utterly redundant concept of building a new e-commerce platform called Journalism Online that would purportedly facilitate newspapers' ability to charge for content online. If newspapers go for Brill's hustle, they deserve an early death -- or, if you prefer, I'll tell you what I really think. That is that it was incredibly stupid for the NAA to even allow the likes of Brill, Gordon Crovitz and Leo Hindery in the room in the first place! Really, folks, these are the naked short sellers of the newspaper industry's financial collapse. Once Journalism Online is consigned to the dustbin of digital history, expect them to pop back up with another original concept, say Cellphone Journalism. Also presenting was another rather murky outfit called the Fair Syndication Consortium, which is said to include Politico, Reuters and Magazine Publishers of America. What has this hastily thrown-together consortium come up with so far? Well, a Valley-based startup, Attributor, which presents itself as "the world’s premier web-wide content tracking and monetization platform. Customers such as The Associated Press, Deutsche Presse Agentur and CondéNet use Attributor to identify new sales leads and revenue-sharing opportunities, monitor licensed uses and derive more links and better search engine placement." Fair enough. If the newspapers won't optimize their content for the web on their own, "seasoned entrepreneurs," as the principals behind this outfit self-identify, will be happy to do it for them. Nothing new here yet. But let's get back to one of the words in the title of Thursday's gathering, "Models to Lawfully Monetize Content." I got the feeling that some online wags found the presence of antitrust lawyers suitable to brew up conspiracy theories, as if all of these newspaper executives and their lawyers are cooking up a way to start charging en masse for their content as their lawyers and lobbyists convince concerned, if misguided, members of Congress like Nancy Pelosi to "relax" antitrust laws that would otherwise preclude said outcome. I doubt it. Have you ever met one of the industry's antitrust lawyers? Let me be blunt. If these companies truly want to figure out how to survive, they should hold their meeting in secret -- from their lawyers! All these guys do is scare them every time they consider something bold. Take Google. Does Google give over its product development to lawyers? No, of course not. It simply starts scanning millions of out of print books, to cite one salient example, and figures the laws will be interpreted as they may, sometime down the road, hopefully long after the algorithm has left the library. (With the librarian, flushed and flustered, breathing after the closing door, "Oh, when will you be coming back to me, my sweet scanner?") Innovation never comes from the risk-averse crowd. Oh the hell with it. Go ahead and just give the rest of your money to Brill, you dummies. Meanwhile, where the hell is Jon Stewart and The Daily Show when we really need them?     More Layoffs Coming in Detroit

    Published: June 01, 2009 10:41 AM ET

    DETROIT The Detroit Media Partnership and The Detroit News have announced layoffs.

    Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing for the partnership, says 129 positions will be cut, including about 25 previously announced at the Detroit Free Press.

    Harshbarger says fewer than 10 positions were cut Friday at the News, comprising editorial and management positions. He said 90 jobs also were eliminated at the partnership, which oversees the business operations at both newspapers.

    The reductions represent about 5 percent of the News' staff, 7 percent at the partnership and 10 percent at the Free Press.

    Harshbarger said a continued economic downturn and a steep decline in advertising revenue led to the decision, but no further cuts are expected.

  54. Even if they do further staff reductions, reduce pay and anything else, why would they give up the furlough concept which is working so well for them by saving millions? The Gannett "slaves" have to accept furloughs but they still have jobs even though their total sslary is reduced. I really do believe that they will keep the furloughs around and will continue to maintain many of the assholes and incompetents who have been protected to far. Incompetence breeds more of the same and by keeping these types around, the idiots in management roles are protected.

    Doubtful. I'm generalizing, but an earlier blogger indicated that they cannot keep doing this due to legalities and labor laws. I think it has to be a short term remedy more than a business practice.

    My money's on more consolidations and centralization of functions such as online and IT technologies.

She began her Gannett career in 1994 as an education reporter in Shreveport and held various reporting and editing positions before becoming managing editor in Jackson, Tenn., in 2001. She became the managing editor in Tallahassee in late 2005.
    "We are going to miss Africa, but are very proud of her accomplishments and wish her well in her new position," said Democrat President and Publisher Patrick Dorsey.
    In her new position, Price will be the top news executive in Shreveport. Throughout her career she has earned various corporate and professional honors, including the Florida A&M University School of Journalism Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.

    Just wait until you need to use your BC/BS for any hospital "event". You will be shocked by how much the costs have soared! It's really becoming a situation in which you might have to consider the possibility of charity care to meet your deductible and then 20% of the doctor's fees and hospital fees if you are in-network.

  59. Lest anyone forget, employees in Gannettland are liabilities, not assets. If they can get the work for cheaper than they're paying now, they will. Right now is a buyer's market for labor, and Gannett is exploiting that. Remember, everyone, Gannett isn't losing money. It's just making less. To keep profit from going lower -- and to push its stock price back up -- it fires and furloughs workers. Any company representations about the value of workers, in Gannett's case, are lies.

    Does anyone believe there will be a third round of furloughs for Gannett employees after this last round wraps up in June???

    Paycuts, just cut my wrist why don't you?! I make so little as it is and I will be starting my 15th year in June. Give me a damn break. I rather have another furlough week and collect unemployment for it, rather then a paycut!

  61. They've set a precedent with furloughs. I don't think they would cut pay now without furloughs. Agree that furloughs are hurting the quality of our newspapers and making it a nightmare to schedule vacations but pay cuts without furloughs at this point would hurt morale even more.

    Worthy of passing on. Went to the eye doctor this afternoon. Both the doctor and his assistant asked me what had happened to the CN/HNT. The doctor said they are abominations in which he would never again advertise. The assistant had cancelled her CN subscription.

    In today's CN/HNT, the editor wrote a very folksy column about listening to people, etc.

  68. They don't care about morale. I think (not fact) they will cut our pay because it will get more out of us than a furlough and they won't have to pay unemployment. Why would they pay umemployment rather than a pay cut? Think like they do.

  69. I heard they are going to institute permanent furloughs and see how long employees will work without a paycheck. They figure some people will complain but will still work because they are afraid of trying to find a new career.....................................Give me a break people.     They will furlough and layoff your asses until the stock goes back up. That point has been made pretty damn obvious since last July, when they freaked when the stock hit $15 as the all time low and all the online people were cut and consolidated.

  72. Furloughs and pay cuts will continue even if the profit goes back up. That's the problem with employees accepting whatever the employer doles out. Now people are suppose to be greatful to have a job no matter what sacrifices they are required to make. When the electrician union was broken 30 some years ago and their pay drastically reduced it took 30 years for their wages to come back up to what they were originally. Gannett will increase your work load and expect more and more from you and your wages will never go back up even if Gannett's profit does. Before I chose to leave Gannett I said," I cannot possibly work under any worse conditions ." Now, I hear from my former colleagues that working conditions are worse than ever.
    When will those who remain stand up and say,'enough'?
