Rochester: Bauer confirms for-pay website 'option'

This just in from Traci Bauer, managing Editor/multimedia and innovation at New York's Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, confirming the pending launch of Roctoday.com.

Hello Jim:

Traci Bauer here in Rochester. I can confirm that we have a pay-model OPTION in the works.

It's not really a secret, though. And, it is important to note that this will not replace our free site. It will be another option. It's all news, that much is right. (Well, and some premium multimedia features on neighborhoods, daytrips, local chefs, etc). We have shown it to a lot of users and staff so there's not a huge mystery. We're just not ready to show it live because it's not done.

It is scheduled to launch on April 26 and will include some premium content, a much, much faster page load and a new retail ad solution. It will be free for two weeks.

Let me know what questions you have and, if I can, I will provide answers.

  1. Put the date in your tickler file, Jim. Interesting to see how this works. I do not understand how the Web site can make money if the newspaper continues its original Web site, but we will see later this month.

  2. Thanks for the response, Traci. While I fear that your experiment won't be successful, I wish you luck and congratulate you for trying something new. Let us know how it works out.

  3. Good luck, Traci. We'll be watching. Was wondering how you increased your load time so much? Table-less design? Or maybe WordPress.
    Cheers...

  4. Im curious. Is this pay site going to have comment sections on the articles like the free site? And if so, is there going to be professional moderation because the comment section on your free site is rife with awful racist rantings and is very unwelcoming to non racists. Whoever is managing the comment section and forums seems to encourage this environment of racial hostility.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
