Pay survey | How much do copy editors make?

I got taken to task today for suggesting copy editors make an average $40,000 a year at The Ithaca Journal, where copy editing and design moves to one of the new regional production hubs this weekend.

Anonymous@3:52 p.m. says: "$28,000 is a better guess."

Now, it's your turn, copy editors; please provide your annual pay, plus your circulation size from one of these four ranges.
  • Under 25,000 copies
  • 25,000 to 50,000
  • 50,001 to 75,000
  • More than 75,000

  2. I make about $28,500.

Depending on who is telling you (lying about) our circulation, we are slightly over or under 25,000 circulation.

  4. Not a copy editor, but they make the same as I do- under 25k (more like 15k) circulation, $20,000/year

  5. I was making $67k as a copy editor until Gannett laid me off in December. But Gannett didn't hire me; it inherited me from competent prior owners of an over-75k paper.

I always felt the layoff targets, what with "openings" being posted at career sites almost immediately, were an anti-labor practice just to drive down wages. Our positions certainly weren't "eliminated."

Judging by the deterioration of quality of the editorial product, Gannett is getting what it pays for. The circulation drop is a reaction to that lack of quality, IMHO.

  8. I was making $65K at a paper with more than 75,000 circ ... after 20 years. And I started there when it was a non-Gannett paper.

I took a pay cut to get out and save my sanity.

  10. An experienced copy editor in Phoenix makes around $60K...but if they came in during the last five years as part of the $500 club they make much, much less...that is starting wages of $500 per week....a very two tiered system....but thenhow much does the average libel payout cost...it is a matter of math.

  11. "but thenhow much does the average libel payout cost...it is a matter of math."

None of that matters. Today's copy editors can't find their ass with their hands.

Jim, are you really admitting you posted some imaginary figure with no idea as to whether it had any validity? You must have been the worst reporter in Gannett. No wonder you're grinding an axe now.

  12. At our paper, with circulation well over 100K, most copy editors make somewhere between 50K and 65K, depending on years of service, duties, merit raises, etc.

  17. Many of the people here now make $0 because they were too stupid to keep their jobs.

They did nothing for far too long, and their employer finally got rid of them. Good riddance.

  18. $41,000 after 10+ years with a paper with around 25,000 circulation.
And 12:42: Don't say copy editors don't do anything. I don't even want to reveal the times I have saved the reporters' reputations by the mistakes I have caught over my years with Gannett. Don't say copy editors don't do anything.. look at the reporters more than them.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
