Nearly 1% of Americans now earn money blogging

That is almost as many people making their living as bloggers as there are lawyers, The Wall Street Journal says today, in a new story: Already, more Americans are making their primary income from posting opinions than Americans working as computer programmers, firefighters -- or even bartenders.

  3. Bullshit has been called. Hanging a few Google ads on a lightly visited site makes you an "American earning money blogging," I guess, but it's misleading to report it out that way. (And the previous message is spam.)

  4. @10:22: Bull crap? Maybe. But I remember in the early nineties when people in the newspaper business were saying the same thing about AOL and chat rooms. And now we know that AOL helped give birth to a media revolution that is destroying newspapers.

So wouldn't be so quick to pooh-pooh the WSJ story. It is true that relatively few bloggers can manage a nice living blogging professionally. But, given the current growth of social media, that may well change over time.

  5. There's a big difference between making a little money blogging and making your primary living that way.

Judging from Jim's high traffic and difficulty making $24,000 a year I suspect this is overblown. Unless, of course, these 1 percent of Americans live off of $5,000 a year or less.

  7. @10:22 & 11:31

You obviously haven't figured out this Internet thing yet.

If you click on the blue text - that's called a link, use your mousey thing to maneuver the pointy cursor thing over it, and push the button - you can go to another page, and have your bullshit called.

Nice job of researching before you put fingers to keyboard. You must be Gannett lifers.
