  1. On yesterday's thread...anyone notice there is no representative from the HNT on the HNT/CN OC. That changed with the December layoffs. And with the current editor shakeup there will be few HNT people left in the HNT newsroom. Control has overwhelmingly gone to the CN. Sad.

  2. How have the advertising sales credits and charge offs been at HNT since the CN Ad Director rolled back into the building?

  3. The CN > HNT equation is mind boggling. Its a much smaller newspaper than HNT & yet they seem to have more POWER, wonder how? I have nothing against the worker bees @ CN, I know they are just doing their jobs but all the Managers @ HNT have been systematically eliminated. Its really sad to see someone from a smaller paper do your job because you were laid off for no good reason. My prayers with all the folks who were let go.

  6. Are the copy editing rank-and-file offered jobs on the Neptune regional desk, or does every desk person now have to reapply for their jobs there too?

  7. What is the 1 PM meeting at the CN all about?

As for the POWER of the CN, seems that PG must have something on somebody! How do they phrase it.."It's not who you know, it's..........."!!!

  10. Mechanics and remaining drivers in the Freehold bureau of the Asbury Park Press - where the printing plant is - just given walking papers. One person I know was laid off, a mechanic with nearly a quarter century with the company, keeps his job until June 1. That person also said the body count was between 25-30 people. I cannot confirm beyond my source, however. Also, real estate people were suffled into the building directly after the layoffs, my source said.

  11. Maby they will just bring everything back to Neptune

  12. yeah, 5:39, maybe they'll bring "it" back to neptune and publish the paper on a copy machine or one of those presses in Ernie's old print shop ... did i just type that building-related reference?

the interesting thing -- if this report of 25-30 folks getting pink slips -- is, where is the outrage? just because they weren't news staffers, these folks contributed in their own special way to the daily publication of the newspapers. too often, all these support departments are just ignored, as if they aren't connected to the enterprise ... what a shame ... for their loss and for their continued disrespect ...

  13. 6:02 NICE SENTIMENT.

I was whacked in APP-Home Delivery Circulation last Thurday---along with 100+ Home Delivery Carriers. No one thinks of all the below minimum wage carriers who are gettinjg their pay cut -yet again.

These people, like sweat-shop workers, come in a 3am to get the papers out. From Gannett, they made $0.13 Monday-Saturday; $0.23 on Sunday. They pay for plastics bags $0.01. The use their own cars, pay their own gas, pay car maintainence (and let me tell you delivering papers KILLS CARS).

These thousands are unseen, not thought about by the rest of GANNETT. They are little migrant workers that no -REALLY- give ashit about.

Well, If you're up early one morning I hope some you you white-collar types at least say hello to a carrier in your own neighborhood.....it would be nice.

  14. Looks like the DR newsroom is not going to fare very well when Gannett NJ consolidates GA reporters and specialty beats.

it doesn't matter if you don't have any mechanics at APP if the papers are printed at AFL

  18. Maybe the CN people are paid less money, that would make them more attractive to Gannett.

As for "bringing everything back to Neptune" -- to get the presses back into Neptune they would have to remove the floorand cubicles they recently built for Circulation.

And it takes about two years to disassemble the presses and the last part out has to be the first part in.

If they are getting rid of Freehold as the printing site, it makes more sense that they would be farming out the printing than "bringing it home."

  19. two years to disassemble a press? Huh? Call Bridgewater, um, Somerville and ask them how long it took to throw their press in the scrap heap. I think it was out in under two weeks.
