Part of an occasional series about yours truly.
Q. You live a life most of us dream about: four- or five-month-long vacations in Spain, weekend trips to Palm Springs, and you live in San Francisco -- which is one the most expensive real estate markets in the country. You obviously don't need the income. How do I know my donation is not going to your lavish lifestyle?
A. Without additional income, I must spend money set aside for my retirement -- a step I'm reluctant to take.
I'm trying to earn $6,000 quarterly, mostly through sponsorships of $5 per reader, plus limited ad sales. Please use the "Donate" tool in the green rail, upper right. Or mail cash/checks payable to: Jim Hopkins, 584 Castro St. #823, San Francisco, Calif., 94114-2594.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

And oh by the way: Is Gannett now demanding that employees justify their spending before they can collect their shrinking paychecks?

ReplyDeleteVery weak answer to a good question? Is that the best you got?
ReplyDeleteI reader wrote the following in an e-mail; I'm posting it below, minus identifying information:
ReplyDeleteWe are losing our way on this blog and forgetting why it is important to us.
1. Whether we're in or out of the company, we do want to know what is happening. Where else can we learn so much? Many of the "rumors" have turned out to be true.
2. Despite our anger and rage, we do care about the industry that we gave so much of our hearts and lives to.
3. Some of the zingers of the big boys do make us laugh, and we all need a laugh.
In appreciation, I sent Jim an extra $50 because I want this blog to continue.

ReplyDeleteShort answer: Debt kills! (Just ask Gracia.)
I paid off all my debts in spring 2000, when I sold my home in Louisville, Ky. I always pay off charge cards at the end of each month. (Note: I call them "charge" -- not credit -- cards.)
Also, I was reared by thrifty New Englanders (hi, Mom and Dad!), who taught me a super-duper secret to instantaneous wealth:
Spend less than your earn, and save the difference!
I did -- and here I am today.
You sure are special.

ReplyDeleteIn response to Jim's question, I have not been forced to justify anything besides expense report reimbursements in any of my 3+ year with Gannett. My paycheck comes regardless if I have a highly productive week or not.
