Detroit | Something's going down, in Motown!
A reliable tipster says: "There will be a 3 p.m. announcement tomorrow in Detroit about Detroit." (My source provided the original tip on Dave Hunke getting named USA Today publisher.)

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

What are the odds this turns out to be bullshit?
ReplyDeleteIf it were any city other than Detroit, I'd say the odds would be even.
In this case, I'll say 10-1 this turns out to be nothing tomorrow afternoon. Just another ape throwing shit at the wall.
I know a lot more.

ReplyDeleteOf course something is going down. They will need to replace Hunke. (Jim this is not a slam on you, but the others who can't stand to read this blog--or can't stand that it isn't their blog.)

ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you've got Jim. I hope it is good news not bad.
ReplyDeleteI'm protecting my source.
ReplyDeleteNow, if I wanted to suss this out, I'd query flight plans for the Corporate jet -- or flight arrangements for McLean-based execs.
ReplyDeleteWell at least that's a start......
ReplyDeleteBased on that tid=bit, I'm guessin it's relative to JOA......

ReplyDeleteWord in Detroit is that Hunke was in Denver last week visiting Singleton.
ReplyDelete9:59 pm: I've heard that one, too.

ReplyDeleteCan't help but wonder....The Citizen is in a joint operating agreement with Lee Enterprises' Arizona Daily Star. The JOA handles circulation and other business functions. Gannett and Lee maintain separate, competing newsrooms. Gannett is offering to sell only the money-losing Citizen's name and customer list, with little else. It's not selling its stake in the JOA, including its profit stream. Those profits apparently would be more profitable with the Citizen gone
ReplyDeleteIt appears the puerile homophobic and sexually perverted comments are designed to do more than diss Jim.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's an attempt to make this Blog so disturbing that the blogee's will stop coming here and participating.
verification word is "sateast" as in Jim sat east of Craig and made him squirm!
I don't suppose this can be layoffs? Wouldn't management have to negotiate with the union for that?
ReplyDeleteNot sure, as I've never been in a union.
Note, however, that there have been recent layoffs in other economically challenged states -- Florida, Nevada, and a smaller Michigan property.
Layoff would not have to be negotiated..........But coming on the heals of Hunke leaving it's got to be other than that.
ReplyDeleteWhen Corporate execs visit Detroit, what hotel(s) do they stay at?
ReplyDeleteThe Fort Shelby (a DoubleTree) is right across the street from the newsrooms.
ReplyDeleteAre you coming to Detroit???
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean our week is going to be even brighter... what with GM, Chrysler, and the Swine Flu.
Besides the Fort Shelby they also would stay at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel or the Marriott Detroit at the Renaissance Center.

ReplyDeleteI think you are right there! But I have a certain knack for scanning posts and not having to read the homophobic crap. So I'll keep reading!
These hotels in Dearborn may also be spots they stay at.
ReplyDeleteTry the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, or the Ritz Carleton in Dearborn if you head to Detroit. Or even the Marriot Dearborn Inn.
9:04, the best thing we can do is ignore the disgusting comments. We all need to stop reacting to them. I learned the hard way in 4th grade that the taunts don't stop until it appears you're not bothered by them.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong; ignoring them will make them worse for a time. But bullies scream louder when they're being ignored because they think the volume will make someone listen.
Just like Jim's disclaimer says: ignore the abusive posters. Pretty soon this bully will get so apoplectic that's he'll give himself a heart attack and solve everyone's problem.
The only announcement is a couple of managers getting promoted.
ReplyDeleteIs there something more happening in Detroit, other than a new CEO, Publisher???
ReplyDelete3 named to top roles at Free Press, DMP
ReplyDeleteBy KATHERINE YUNG • FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER • April 29, 2009
Susie Ellwood will become CEO of the Detroit Media Partnership and Paul Anger has been named the editor and publisher of the Detroit Free Press.
Gannett Co. Inc., owner of the Free Press, announced the appointments today, a day after it named David Hunke the new president and publisher of USA Today. Hunke had been publisher of the Free Press and the Detroit Media Partnership CEO.
Gannett also announced that Joyce Jenereaux, the Detroit Media Partnership’s senior vice president/finance, has been promoted to executive vice president of the partnership.
“The depth and range of talent at the Detroit operation makes this transition all the easier,” said Hunke, who will continue to supervise the Detroit operation.
Anger, who had been serving as the Free Press’ editor and vice president/news, joined the newspaper in 2005 and led a team that this month won the newspaper’s 9th Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Detroit mayoral scandal. He has held a variety of positions in his journalism career including: editor and vice president of the Des Moines Register, executive sports editor of the Miami Herald and editor and publisher of the Herald’s Broward County publications.
Ellwood has been the executive vice president and general manager of the Detroit Media Partnership since 2006. She has worked at the partnership in various marketing roles since 1991, with the exception of two years as vice president/market development for the Gannett Newspaper Division. The Arkansas native also previously served as vice president and director of marketing for the Arkansas Gazette.
Jenereaux has been the senior vice president/finance since 2005. Her previous roles at the partnership include vice president and controller, financial reporting manager and assistant controller.
The Detroit Media Partnership manages the business operations of the Free Press and the Detroit News.

Funding is being given to help refurbish these hotels...why isn't someone making sure that the vendors or subs are getting paid for doing the work. These Corporations sure are getting the funding but it doesn't seem that they are necessarily passing it along to those who do the work. Big, beautiful hotels...and the ones who worked so very hard to help make that happen, can't even get paid for it. Pretty rotten.
ReplyDeleteThe comment made by the manager of the Fort Shelby- it really makes you wonder how low they will go to "steal from the other guy to survive"????? "The statistics are scary," admits Shannon Dunavent, general manager of the Doubletree Guest Suites hotel that was lovingly carved out of the carcass of the Fort Shelby. "I've been working in Michigan for 20 years and I won't lie to you. There's no new business in the market. We're all trying to steal from the other guy to survive".
Bar and restaurant in facility looked upscale. Room was gorgeous. The hotel is very lovely when you walk in the lobby, it is so beautiful and the rooms itself are just perfect. The room was beautiful, clean and spacious, and the staff were very friendly. Beautiful decor, excellent service from the front door to the front desk! This is a beautiful hotel. It was gorgeous and the staff was VERY helpful. Atmosphere, dining and bar in hotel, absolutely wonderful. "...provides outstanding luxury accommodations in beautifully restored surroundings".
It's sad, beatuiful hotel and yet there are unpaid vendors/subs in regard to the renovation work. Everyone should be paid in full!!!

Something certainly is going down in mowtown...The Fort Shelby hotel has been beautifully refurbished, but apparently not all have been paid for the hard work they did to help make the hotel beautiful...at least that seems to be the case according to public record.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Detroit have enough problems without big corporations hurting the local talent by not paying for services rendered?
Even the hilton people said how proud they were to have local talent doing the work on the hotel.
The hotel had some kind of big event after it opened and sold over 800 tickets for $200.00 each (according to local news article), the hotel has been booked solid according to other news articles...they would be hard pressed to say that they don't have the funds to pay what is owed. It's ashame they treat local workers this way.
Ft Shelby Hilton Hotel - an underage drinker at the Spring Fling??????
ReplyDeleteOMGosh...in this article (see link below) there appears to be a picture of 3 girls under the age of 18 (as noted in pic) and one seems to be holding an alcoholic drink???
http://nachofoto.com/gallery/Spring_Fling_at_Fort_Shelby_Apartments-1
The girl in in pic # 1 of 51
Not only does the Ft Shelby appear to approve of underage drinkers it also seems to not want to pay for work done to it...per the article below.
What is going on with this hotel and the people who own and run it?????????????????????????????
Submitted by One Voice Among Many: The hotel has time to do all of this fancy stuff for well known people (see below) but they don't have time to pay the little people for the hard work they have done on the hotel? ...Detroit has more than enough problems without big corporations hurting the local workers by not paying for services rendered. How can a hotel that carries the "H" name get away with not paying for work done? ....It's uncalled for to treat local workers in this manner! (Dave Bing told The Insider he’s confident and relaxed. He chatted as workers set up chairs, balloons were already afixed to netting in the ceiling, waiting to rain down, and his campaign visage appeared on a big screen on the second floor of the Doubletree Fort Shelby Hotel...the hotel where he celebrated his Feb. 24 primary victory. The hotel, incidentally, was developed by Emmett Moten, a key Bing backer.)
