I received the following note from Gannett Foundation Executive Director Tara Connell. She is responding to my request to examine the foundation's public tax returns at the charity's office at Gannett headquarters in McLean, Va. Note: I plan to live-blog my examination.
Jim, the office will be open at 9 a.m. on Monday. As required by law, the foundation will make available copies of its Form 990-PFs filed within the past three years.
Please post your replies in the comments section, below. To e-mail confidentially, write gannettblog[at]gmail[dot-com]; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the green rail, upper right.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

"... filed within the past three years." That's not going to be sufficient, is it?
ReplyDeleteThe IRS might not require an agency to keep returns for 20 years, but in my experience, all business organizations do keep a copy of every tax return somewhere, because the statute of limitations never ends for certain things an examiner could be investigating, theoretically albeit not commonly.
Jim isn't an examiner, though. He's a bumbling fool trying to appear as if he knows what he's doing.

ReplyDeleteThe Gannett 990-PFs in its database only cover the years 1997-2007. I'm especially interested in the foundation officers during 1988-91, which is why I need to go to the foundation's office.
Then I don't understand. The foundation is only required to show you returns from the past three years, which, as I understand it, are already on line. The '08 returns aren't due until November.
So what is it you are trying to do? Your other posts (quoted above) said you were looking for '88-'91 returns, which the foundation isn't required to make available to you.
You statements conflict withthemselves. I'm confused.
They conflict because he has no fucking clue what he's doing.
ReplyDeleteHe just likes annoying Connell. He's secretly hoping that if he annoys them enough, they'll offer him a deal to cease and desist.
ReplyDeleteMan, Gannett sure does know how to get their minions out, or what? Fresh out of the Karl Rove Skool of Character Assassination.
ReplyDeleteNever once have I seen you defend/counter the complaints of your employees - both current and former, who willingly and didn't Drink Da Kool-Aid - posted here of that's wrong with the company.
You all are like a bad high school clique; see you at the reunion, when you're fat, overweight, riddled with health problems, and driving a big car to compensate for your low esteem.
Remember, Mr. Hopkins: Strong and bitter words indicate a weak argument!
7:32, that's precisely the point! "Remember, Mr. Hopkins: Strong and bitter words indicate a weak argument!"
ReplyDeleteNow where are those strong and bitter words generally born around here?
(... hint, see also: "barreling into Washington")
It's a great question... could Jim be bought off?
ReplyDeleteI personally don't think so.
He would, however, print the contents of his meeting on the Blog, his offer, and would then send copies of the minutes to the board of directors.
GCI is afraid of this guy... there's no doubt about it.
The posts from the last couple of days trying to raise questions about his net worth, or the suggestion that he could be day trading the stock based on his holdings (all nonsense) just proves that there those working for Gannett that are trying to make it seem like Jim has other motives.
The reality, though, is that the corporate culture at Gannett, is to keep employees in the dark and instill fear in them by controlling the message.
Now, Jim is controlling the message, and GM and CD and the rest don't know what to do.
Morale is terrible... everyone that works hard for the company is looking for work and will find something else to do when the economy improves.
And Gannett really couldn't care less.
I have written here about the talent pool and who would decide to work in this industry if given the choice.
Managers, already some of the weakest in all business, will get weaker. Employees less competent. Senior management... well, we've already seen where this group of clowns has gotten us.
Anyone wonder about the "bench strength" and what the plan looks like over the next five years?
Management's allies cannot understand why someone would do what I do, essentially for free. They do not understand life without a dollar figure attached to it. They do not understand that honorable journalists would pay to do what I'm able to do right now. Tragic.
ReplyDeleteWow. Messiah complex much?
ReplyDeleteThanks Jim for your good work. I can't wait for you to live blog your meet and greet with the G. Foundation tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I really want one of those hats. Do you have any plans of opening an online gift shop. Maybe something with a logo for the gannett blog and a spot where we could customize a t-shirt with another line of text.
Oh, and I'd like a little mini-Jim to wear around my neck. You know, kinda like a crucifix, but for the digital age.

Easy to say when you have plenty of money in the bank. Would you make the same statement if you had a wife and 3 children and were just laid off?
