Closing bell: Markets rally again; GCI closes up 2%

Gannett's stock closed moments ago at $2.44 a share, up 1.7%, on a day when stock markets overall rose on a surge in technology shares: The tech-rich Nasdaq index jumped 4%. The Dow Jones industrials rose 2.5%, and the S&P-500 index was up 3.2%.

  1. On big days for either the stock market or Gannett's stock, a post dedicated to GCI's price is relevant. But when a stock is trading at $2, a move of 7 cents is more than 3 percent. That's not exactly big news -- can I ask you to limit stock updates to something like +/- 10 percent?

  2. Agree with 1:00. A move of greater than 10 percent warrants some note, especially if there is some company announcement that can be linked to the change. But the day to day ups and downs aren't particularly interesting, meaningful or telling of anything.

  3. And I (generally) agree with you both. I've been writing more stock posts recently for this reason:

The price rise was noteworthy, if only for balance and fairness; we've posted a lot about its fall, after all.

  4. For crying out loud. First everyone complained about the whining. Now those folks are whining about what is going on the blog. Doesn't anyone know how to scan something and let it go. Frankly, all these demands are getting tiring.

  5. I agree that the demands are getting tiring. Seems to me the demands are coming from those who might fail to look at the big picture, or at the news that an entire group rather than just a single person wants to know.

And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
