Tip: Publishers meeting with Dickey this week

I hear nearly a dozen are convening at Corporate starting as soon as tomorrow or Wednesday, for a series of meetings with newspaper division President Bob Dickey. Is your publisher among them?

  1. A question for anyone whose publisher is one of those meeting with Dickey:

How much of the meeting agenda is focused on any events planned for the first week of April -- which is next week?

  2. Perhaps this meeting is about consolidation. Either those to be axed or those to gain additional publisher responsibilities for the other 70-some-plus daily newspapers. Or perhaps both subjects will be discussed.

  3. No, it is focused on the next three months, not just April. I fear what these meetings will produce, because it will not be good.

  4. tell me again why they can not do this meeting over the phone or a video conference? It is so much cheaper then flying them in, putting them up and feeding them. I thought Gannett was going digital?

  5. Do you mean next week?

  6. 10:40 pm: To clarify, I meant: How much of this week's meeting is focused on fallout from any newspaper layoffs during the week of April 6?

Of course, I'm talking about fallout going forward, because I hear the meeting's desperate-sounding agenda boils down to: "What the fuck are we supposed to do now?''

And that discussion, obviously, would at least cover the second quarter -- which begins Wednesday.

  7. Clarification on period:
Rather than following the real calendar, doesn't Gannett follow the 5-4-4 scheme, which would put the start of the quarter Today (3/30)?

  8. If it's only a dozen, that's not many publishers. Regional VPs and some metros, perhaps? I don't think a quarterly meeting of those muckety-mucks is so unusual, although in these tough times anything awful could be discussed.

  9. 1:33 - Yes, you're correct on both.

  10. Jim, I must say, you have the sound of a man who knows more than he's telling.

  11. 9:08 am: I am very, very sorry to confirm that you are correct.

  12. I agree with 10:40 they are meeting to focus on the next three months. and to look at the second half of the year. Also, the expense reductions requsted last month were really high and i'm not sure if sites can meet them with out layoffs which will be discussed also.

  13. OK, Jim, can you give us worker bees any more or do you need triple-source confirmation?

  14. I presume even the millionaire morons running Gannett will be smart enough not to suffer the fallout of the last round of layoffs. Which announced there would be layoffs ... yep, they're coming ... pretty soon now ... any day ... patch your bleeding ulcer and do your best ... the day ... is ... almost ... here.

Which means plan B will be a sneak attack, as in, ta da, its LAYOFF day. Surprised?

Which means it is critical, Jim, that you provide information as quickly as is reasonably prudent.

No shadow of a doubt proof needed ... we are counting on you, Jim ...
    Jim?

  15. Jim when you say April 6 layoffs, do you mean more are coming April 6? I haven't seen you report that you suspect that, so I'm not quite clear.

  16. 12:06 pm and all:

That is, indeed, the first time I have reported what I have been told: a newspaper layoff is planned for the week of April 6.

  17. Thanks for the head's up Jim. Good to know. Hope the cuts aren't too deep, but we'll see.

  18. Just curious, ( and maybe this is a silly question), but when you say "newspaper" layoffs, are you referring to mainly journalists/ad people/white collar...Or does that include production as well??

I've meant to ask them for some time, as I know most of the people posting on here are probably more white collar, and there's more interest in what's going on with those jobs...I understand that...My partner works in the plant @ a GCI paper, and of course we're concerned about his job as well...So thanks, just curious!!

  19. Jim, you're wrong on USCP layoffs next week, sorry,

  20. Must have been a real secret meeting. Nobody was around.
