Stars align, as Dubow said returning from furlough

Expectations for news today from The 11th Floor get ratcheted higher, as a confluence of events come into alignment:

1. Under one roof: CEO Craig Dubow (left) and newspaper division chief Bob Dickey are both working the Gannett Tower this morning -- the only time they'll cross paths again until around March 30, as I understand schedules: Today, Dubow is back from his furlough last week; Dickey's furlough is next week. Conventional wisdom says you want Corporate's triumvirate on hand, should news break out. (This assumes No. 3, Chief Financial Officer Gracia Martore, is working the tower this week, too.)

2. And speaking of furloughs: If an unpaid week is to be announced for the second quarter, Wednesday afternoon might be a good day to give details. That's when Dubow and almost certainly Martore offer guidance on current-quarter revenue and other financials, in a presentation to the Media and Entertainment Analysts of New York. (12:45 p.m. ET. Webcast details.)

3. Pressure from Wall Street: Investors big and small will watch shares today after trading resumes at 9:30 am ET, to see if GCI remains above the $2 line for a third consecutive day. Shares closed Friday at $2.14, down 1.4%.

4. Quarter's end draws near: There are now just 12 business days to cut expenses further or generate more revenue, before the quarter ends March 31. To be sure, Corporate's quarter closes with the end of Period Three. (When is the end of Gannett's first quarter, anyway?)

5. Executive pay report looms: The annual proxy report to stockholders, due at any moment, will disclose annual pay for Dubow, Dickey and the other top brass. It's a public document -- meaning anyone can see it, after the company files it with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

  1. Periods end on Sundays, so the end of Period 3 (and Q1) is March 29.

  3. I'm excited - no, breathless - with the possibilities, don't get me wrong, but Dickey works on the 4th floor, just so you know.

  5. I'll confess up front there may be no substance behind this, but our place is hearing really strong and repeated rumors of something big coming down on the 18th. I think it is more than that conference session.

  6. Jeez, it's a regular freakin' harmonic convergence.

I'm not sure whether I should be squeezing my crystal, working on my chakras or just kissing my ass goodbye.

And GCI is up 15 percent this morning.
