Monday Recap: And they earned every penny, too!

Gannett Blog readers wrote 1,043 comments last week on posts you may have missed, including the following:

We heard CEO Craig Dubow may still be refereeing a turf battle between two of his vice presidents: chief corporate publicist Tara Connell vs. community newspapers editorial czar Kate Marymont. Next, public documents showed bionic board member Karen Hastie Williams pulled down an estimated $819,000 in director's fees from Gannett and four other companies last year. Finally, GCI said revenue has plunged 24% in the first two months of this quarter, a disclosure made after the company revealed paying $2 million in bonuses to Dubow and four other top executives in 2008.

  1. I wonder if Obama's staff is watching this blog. I am sure Prez Obama would be interested in taxing these executives 95% of their bonus.

  2. You have to remember that the paying of executive bonuses was forced on companies in the 1990s by the Clinton administration. Otherwise the money would be rolled up in a traditional salary and there wouldn't be this furor and compensation would rise or fall with a company's success. Now the bonuses are contractual and largely done way in advance of the tough times that bring on the outrage. Again, largely blame DC. Who is investigating Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, whose fingers are all over every step of this mess?

  3. You always have the choice to accept or deny a bonus. With tough times come tough decisions and clearly their pocket book is doing all the thinking. If they were in this business for any other reason, no bonuses would have been handed out or accepted. It is sad that our leaders feel comfortable taking bonuses of this size. If their attitudes doesn't change there will be an uproar and they will get AIGed.
