U.K. union charges 'repeated and callous cuts'

[The Press is one of 17 dailies in GCI's U.K. Newsquest unit]

This just in, from the National Union of Journalists chapter in York, England: Seven editorial jobs are set to be cut at The Press. Newsquest management announced the cuts on the newsroom floor at 2:45 local time this afternoon in a statement to all staff. In a statement, the York branch of the National Union of Journalists condemned, the latest in a series of cutbacks at the Press. Joint fathers of chapel Tony Kelly and Gavin Aitchison said:

"The Press and its journalists have been battered by repeated and callous cuts in recent years, placing serious strain on our ability to serve the people of York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire. Today's announcement is a further body-blow to local journalism in our region. We have no faith whatsoever in Newsquest's commitment to quality journalism, nor its ability to deliver it."

The NUJ says it's trying to organize a community buyout of the Press, a daily newspaper with a circulation of about 32,000.
