Philly papers owner seeks bankruptcy protection

[Today's front page, with bankruptcy story in far-left column]

The owner of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection yesterday, in a bid to restructure its debt; several Gannett New Jersey papers compete with the Inky. Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., owned by Philadelphia Media Holdings, is the second newspaper company in two days, and fourth in recent months, to seek bankruptcy protection, the Associated Press says. The Journal Register Co. filed for Chapter 11 on Saturday. Chicago-based Tribune Co. sought protection in December, and The Star Tribune of Minneapolis followed suit last month.

  1. Say - is this the paper that Ketan Ghandi ran to in order to hide from the corruption charges at HNT?

  5. Three former Courier-Post execs went there too. They are the Boys' Club trio of Mark Frisby - former pub, Tom Geonnotti - former AD and Jim Gregory, former CD.

Didn't take them long to ruin things.

  6. I look at that front page and my first thought was that we -- the industry -- still aren't getting it. Most of that 'news' was on TV or the 'net the night before. Local, local, local, folks. We are idiots; we are driving the steam rollers that are paving our destiny. We need to wake up.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
