Crying in beer: What to buy instead of a $5 share

As Gannett's stock threatens to close below the psychologically crucial $5 mark today, here's a look at other stuff to buy for a fin.

  3. Someone surely would like that blue ball on Craig and Gracia's floor. Not sure though if Al's bronze bust is still available.

  5. Buy local? Who's that, Miller? Leinie is about as close as it gets.

Best thing about being on furlough is never having to say "I'm not sober enough to come in..."

Second best thing is not being sober enough to go ANYWHERE!

    Go cheeseheads!

    Haven't you forgotten about

    Point Brewery?
    Central Waters Brewing Co.?

There are plenty of local micro breweries around to keep that extra fridge in the garage full.

Wisconsin "former" Gannettoids Bar Crawl anyone?

  7. Wonder if any of the trinkets for sale on the USAT site are less than $5.00?

Oh, and how is that airport coffee shop branding plan working out?

  8. I got a grande mochafrappachino on my way home this noon for $4.17, including tax. Gannett stock beat that today, thank heavens.
I never believed I would see the day when Gannett stock would be this low. I worked for Gannett when it hovered around $89 a share, when it split and when you could count on it being valued at over $58.
I also would tease co-workers when it fell below $30, as I had long moved all my 401k money out of Gannett and into the stable value fund.
We now know what caused it to crash.
What can be done to make it rise again?

  9. Wonder if they'd let me in the restroom at the Newseum for $5? 'Bout the only way I'll give that place any money in a city laden with great museums for free. And I'm a news junkie who would love to see the collection there, but will refuse to pay the obscene price.

  10. Speaking of costs, the beancounters at corporate have just cut off access to several floors of the parking garages this week at USA Today to cut down on the lightening costs. This is after they unplugged what was the world's largest neon sign on the cafeteria floor - which cost approx. $20,000 a year in electricity costs. What's next, editing by candle light?

Why can't they just save some considerable $$$ and stop paying ex-CFO Larry Miller his $300,000 a year Idi Amin consultant for life gig?
