Commentz Korner: Please note our new advisory

Chain-smoking Law Department General Counsel Selma Bouvier cautions: "Treat comments with caution; they are not verified as accurate. Please, ignore abusive posters; deny them the attention they crave. Finally, by posting a comment, you agree to relinquish any claims against any persons associated with Gannett Blog."

  1. What? People are suing you for letting them post on Gannett Blog?
    What?

  2. Now seriously, with some of the information that is shared on this blog that could be considered "company confidential," there is the possibilty that Jim could receive a subpoena from Gannett's legal department or an outside firm hired by the company to give up the IP addresses of posters.

That information would go back through Google, a company that has been more than willing to work with the justice department on cases like that where insider information was shared on stock message boards.

Given the annual expected revenue of Gannett Blog, Jim would not have the resources to hire his own counsel to fight against the company.

He could argue the "chilling effect" consequences, which is exactly the outcome that Gannett is after.

This blog, and the countless hours that employees waste reading about issues that the company won't share internally, is a huge problem for Gannett.

The culture of accepting and promoting mean people to become publishers has finally met its match, thanks to Jim.

  3. People have been naming names a lot more lately. Is that what the warning is about?
I noticed that someone won a judgment against a blog for defamation or some such thing recently.

  4. I'll give you a big clue about why I posted this: notorious comment spammer!

  5. Perhaps Alan Neuharth and the Freedom Forum can come to the rescue of this blog. In reality, an organization that boasts a name like that should be in the business of protecting speech rights. Not just building monuments ... err I mean museums ... to honor its founder. In that vane, perhaps someday DuBow will be lucky enough to get an outdoor crapper named in his honor. I really think he deserves that much recognition for all of his efforts.

  6. Jim--off subject here--do you want us to vote on our favorite mug?

  7. You may vote if you like. Just for fun, I'm going to post a new mug daily.

  8. This one, with snappy glasses, is better than the toothy dark one.
    Everything is relative.

  9. 10:54 AM AKA Scott,

It's very easy to make yourself anonymous to subpoenas.

Google: anonymous proxy. Find one in another country. Preferably in a country that does not cooperate with the good old USA.

    Problem solved.

  10. It is called routing your traffic off-shore through other country's portals. Easy to do if you have a brain.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
