"We all will be sharing the financial hardship."
-- newspaper division chief Bob Dickey on Wednesday, when Gannett ordered 35,000 U.S. workers to take a week off without pay.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Except Honolulu, Tuscon, Detroit....
ReplyDelete6:44. Tucson is closing at the end of March you Moron!
ReplyDeleteNew employees?
ReplyDeleteSince upper-level execs earn X-more than the line employees... why doesn't the board slash their pay for more than one week? These pigs can live on what they make in one quarter, why should stockholders be paying them for all four?
ReplyDeleteI'm tempted to be reminded of the banking executive who was punched in the face by an employee at the gym for how he ran his bank into the ground.
Anybody close enough to get a nice jab-hook combo on any of these guys?
Judging from this quote and Jim's message that he's working on a sports related story, here's a prediction. Jim's about to write on Bob Dickey once again playing in the Bob Hope Desert Classic in Palm Springs.
ReplyDeleteGee, I thought he'd be playing at Whistling Straits near Sheboygan on his furlough! Not.
ReplyDeleteDo the top execs lose the use of their company cars and country clubs for a week? These perks given the financial condition of the company are inexcusable.
ReplyDeleteCheck the pro-am pairings. He always plays with Frank Vega. Also check the price of admission for one amateur. It may be one of the greatest trade deals in history.
ReplyDeleteRobot Dickey! Good corporate boy. Here is your treat Robot Bob.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that after he shared the good news with the folks at Tucson, Dickey was seen partying at The Eagles/Cardinals game on Sunday. Good work if you can get it. Who paid for the box?
ReplyDeleteHe has no clue what it is like to worry about paying the basic bills and the scary part is that he really doesn't care. I see this again and again, even within my own company and surprisingly with younger employees. They don't see the writing on the wall and think because they are part of Metromix they are the golden children and can do whatever they want. I think soon they will be in for a very shocking reality.
ReplyDeleteI heard a rumor today that Gannett is bringing in special consultants to tell their employees how to get unemployment payments during their furloughs. Evidently, Gannett has paid so much into the unemployment system that they don't have to pay more for more people using it. So it's basically a way of getting the government (read you and and me) to pay their people so they don't have to. Anyone else hear this?
ReplyDelete9:41...you are so right about Metromix. It reeks of amateur hour.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you will be seeing Dickey at the gym in McLean.
ReplyDeleteWell, the pairings for the Bob Hope Classic are in The Desert Sun today, and there is Bob Dickey, playing as usual. The Gannett world may be changing for most employees, but certainly not for Bob or his friends - "FOB's" - that enjoy the fruits of everyone else's labor...

ReplyDeleteUnemployment, as I understand it, is paid by a tax employers have to pay to the states. It can change every year based on how many claims were filed the previous year. Extended benefits, or unemployment that runs longer than the typical 26 weeks, is federally subsidized.
