Revealed: The benefit only publishers are granted

Regarding my survey on how much senior Gannett executives make, Anonymous@7:10 a.m. comments: "I have no idea what our publisher is paid. But I know this to be true because I've seen the delivery with my own two eyes: He gets two-ply paper in his private bathroom."

  1. My understanding is that publishers, executive editors and others at that level are paid by corporate rather than the local paper. Is this true?

  2. LOL, the publisher at my paper must really enjoy his two-ply ... he rarely leaves his office wing; and on the rare occasion that he does to chat up news about the Giants with our executive editor, he doesn't look anyone in the eye.

  3. LOL -- the publisher in Jackson MS has a bathroom off his office complete with a shower and a phone by the toilet. Our current publisher inherited it -- the throneroom was built this way back in the 1990s.

  4. Shoot, as several of the Gannett papers where I worked the publishers had private bathrooms.

  5. With how tight our site is budgeted, I'm guessing the publisher brings in his own.

  6. Back a few years ago when the QUEEN arrived in Lansing she had them put a kitchen in with a dishwasher and all.

  7. The private bathrooms are needed so that the publishers are protected from revealing how much time they spend in the crapper.

  8. Yes Jim.
Directors and Publishers are paid from Corporate.

  9. Cincy's publisher has one too. It backs up to her largest conference room. A little more soundproofing between the walls would be nice, especially for those who quietly await her return.

    crap they're full of.

  11. hey 11:25

I remember when this was done. The queen also at the same time completely redid the office complete with new furniture. She also commissioned an artist to create a special painting for the area.

What a B*&(H. Now she is in LA.

  12. First the Big Three and their private jets; now this.

  13. Cincy publisher also has her own kitchen area with a dishwasher that the cleaning crew runs for her at night. Not only does she require her minions to pick up her lunch everyday, but also she will not eat it in the restaurant packaging. An admin assistant is required to set up her food on a proper plate with utensils - a meal befitting her highness.

  14. i'm an ex gci pub....compensation depends on market size. here's the rough breakdown: 10 to 50,000 circ about 100k to 200k. 50 to 100,000 circ about 150k to 300k. 100,000 circ and up...250k to 400k for all except PHO, Indy and Detroit. those are likely well over 500k...

  15. Are Cincinnati’s employees still handling Buchanan's groceries and car needs too?

This always went down well with employees, especially when she was slicing jobs in those groups that were forced to serve her every need.

  16. While publishers and directors (and some high level managers) are paid through corporate, those salaries are then expensed back to the local property. Sometimes improvements to the building - like kitchens and bathrooms - are paid out of the "under $20K capital" funds. Each property gets a certain amount each year. So the kitchen that Lansing got may mean fewer new copiers or other equipment. Then there are the capital funds where you get those dollars for presses and over $20 equipment/improvement needs. All has to be ok'd by the regional/corporate bosses. The publisher has a rather large budget that comes out of the local property as well.

  17. It was just a matter of time before the Queen started taking shots here. We were all so afraid to say anything. Since leaving Ft. M, she's had four stops... and no one can quite figure out what she's up to.

    Except probably reading this.

  18. Additional confirmation: Director level staff and above are corporate employees. This would inlcude the Publisher, VPs, Directors. This expense does come back to the local operation.

  19. Walt Lafferty, publisher of the Courier-Post, Cherry Hill, NJ, has a private bathroom as well as a private door from which he can enter or exit his office without going through any other portion of the building. This arrangement goes back to the days when the tirant Bob Collins resided in this office. Lafferty parks his company car outside of this private entrance rather than in the employee parkiing lot. This way he doesn't have to mingle with the lowly masses (employees).

  20. RE: Cincy publisher lunch requirements. As an additional FYI, she likes her chicken salad placed just so on the plate; and the accompaning crackers must be fanned out in a particular manner before the plate is served to her.

    Can you say Marie Antoinette?

  21. Do publishers still get a company paid car? If they still do, given what everyone else has given up, this is inexcusable.

  22. ...given how far too many people feel about her in Cincy I'm surprised she dares let anyone touch her food. She really doesn't understand that people expect her to walk the talk.

  23. Arnie Garson at the Couier Journal in Louisville had building services put up his X-mas trees and install his flat screen TV's he had delivered to CJ

  24. Re: Cincy publisher menu.

Admins are also expected to provide proper dietary information for Margaret's children special needs.

  25. CP's Lafferty comes across his executive cluelessness and arrogance honestly: He's cut from Journal Register Co. cloth. Coming from JRC, he's seen Gannett's future.

  26. I don't understand one thing. If my publisher is making between 100k-200k, why can't he dress appropriately? The Advertising dept has a dress code. Men must wear dress clothing with a tie. I can't remember the last time I saw my Publisher wear a tie. Khakis and sweaters are ok in his eyes.

How can anyone take him seriously?

  27. 2-ply?
    Big deal.
It's been proven time and time again that 2-ply paper is much more efficient a removing lipstick from rear ends.

  28. I'm always amazed by the comments that I read here about Walt Lafferty. I worked with him and FOR him for years in Morristown. When he became publisher there, he was totally accessible. In fact, he would come down to advertising and talk with EVERYONE every day and the door to his office was ALWAYS OPEN. He was anything but clueless and arrogant. Now he won't "mingle with the lowly masses (employees)?" Wow, what the heck did they do to him down in South Jersey? It's hard for me to believe you're talking about the same man.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 9:18 - I second your opinion.

Walt Lafferty is a real person, concerned about employees, smart, approachable, open minded and friendly.

I know first-hand from working for him in Morristown. We were all sorry to see him go, and would be very happy if he came back.
