Gawker: Dickey's lesson for other news execs

From the widely read media gossip blog, about newspaper division chief Bob Dickey joining fellow Gannett bigwigs at winter golf resort Palm Springs, Calif.:

Don't let your employees find out about your fun "business" trips. Not because the scared-for-their-livelihood journalists will dare to write you up in their own papers, but because they might leak word to one of those parasitic, good-for-nothing bloggers.

  1. Great Job Jim!
Bobby (boobie) was at our sight a couple of times and he truly is not believable. For all you top execs out there. Pay close attention as this behavior is how you get us to trust you. Feel our pain. You are so full of shit.

  2. Jim, did you ever have this much fun when you actually worked for USAT?

  3. As an exercise in self-persecuation, I have been reading Paul Mulshine for years.

His attitude is somewhere to the right of a robber baron and he probably would have deemed the Magna Carta an affront against nature.

His screeds have grown increasingly defensive over the years as he runs up against more and more dissenting opinions that are backed by facts and information he chooses to ignore.

He is an extreme example of a "real journalist" whose motives for deriding the Internet may be that he only knows how to use his computer like a typewriter.

Yes, people will always need someone to distill boring council meetings down to the important points, but there are plenty of bloggers, posters and activists willing to do that for free.

And yes, some of them will do it through a prism of a political agenda.

But, then, so apparently does Mr. Mulshine.

  4. It wasn't just the golf. Both Dickey and Michelle Krans are board officers on the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the trip west was timed with the festival. Hob-nobbing with actors and the rich at night, golf with the pros by day. Multi-tasking in these hard times. How admirable.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
