A company document reveals a poignant chapter in American journalism history, offering an inside account of where newspapers go to die: the Louisville, Ky., customer call center I wrote about yesterday. A Gannett Blog reader faxed the document and a note to a mailing service here in San Francisco. I paid the $3.50 charge.
Now, in a new crowdfunding experiment, I'm submitting my expense report for that post -- to all of you. Imagine: a message-in-a-bottle for future historians, explaining the newspaper industry's 21st century decline, and for just $3.50. What a stupendous bargain!
After all, I'm trying to earn $6,000 quarterly, mostly through sponsorships of $5 per reader, plus ad sales. Please use the "Donate" tool in the green sidebar, upper right. Or mail cash/checks payable to: Jim Hopkins, 584 Castro St. #823, San Francisco, Calif., 94114-2594.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

That depends ... do we ever get to read it?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I cannot share this document without possibly jeopardizing a source.

ReplyDeleteParaphrase ... pleeeeze.
january 16 post from the alt "ville voice" blog in Louisville.
ReplyDelete"More C-J Layoffs? The rumor mill has it that cost-cutting at the C-J includes the firing of the janitorial staff at Sixth and Broadway in favor of contracted cleaner uppers. And remember all the hoopla over the new Gannett Call Center and the 240 employees it would hire two years ago? It was designed to handle customer-service calls for 33 Gannett papers. We hear that staff has been cut and manager Scheri Smith let go."
Then I have to be brutal and ask: Why should we pay for it?
ReplyDeleteTease.
ReplyDeleteDo we need to pay this if we've already given $5 for the quarter?
ReplyDeleteA bunch of BS if you ask me. Show it or shut up. Religion is the only thing people take on faith and I don't even do that. Can't afford a fax machine? Wouldn't snail mail be less expensive than a $3.50 fax?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Jim will tell us, when it's time to tell us. Be guaranteed it will be sooner than corporate! Keep up the good work, Jim!
ReplyDeleteIf Jim worked at a paper and handed in an expense voucher for a document he wasn't going to write about, there'd be eyebrows raised. Same thing here.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to offer support, but not for stuff you can't share.
