REALLY glad to have this back Jim. I was one of the fortunate ones that got out of Gannett earlier this year. Although the media company I joined has similar revenue and expense issues the big difference is it has a heart and definately cares more for the employees. I do not wish Gannett any ill will and actually am hoping they weather this storm because it will be good for us all.
We all have our calling and part of yours is this blog. Thanks for rejoining this fight, you helped me through some very difficult times. I hope you start screaming from the web that Gannett Blog is Back! Get on the terminator shades and strap the depends on the suits. All the best - FG
hey jim have any additional info on the artist consolidation? i see on gannettoid they released a rollout schedule twice allready pushing papers original move dates back 3 months
Some of Corporate's higher-ups are coming to Cherry Hill on Thursday. To prepare they are dismantling empty cubicles in advertising and redoing the lobby. Rumors say there is going to be big changes in the areas served by info center and advertising after the new year. One can only hope they take EJ back with them.
It was pretty startling to see a post from you come up in the RSS reader, Jim... much like getting an email from an ex-girlfriend or dead relative.
I have to say: as great as it was to be informed of the rubbish going on in this company when you were up and running, things were better after you shut things down and I didn't have to get my daily dose of depression and discouragement anymore.
GCI is going to do whatever they're going to do whether we like it or not and whether we know about it or not.
Consider letting the blog rest in peace. Sadly, ignorance has been bliss.
9:23 p.m.: Ex-girlfriend or dead relative?! (Actually, I can see the analogy.)
Still, and strangely, during the five months I didn't post a single thing on this site, Gannett Blog recorded nearly 50,000 visits. That's a lot of people looking for an old flame or dearly-departed uncle.
9:23: I couldn't agree more. I'm surprised Jm een allowed your post.
I was one that came back from time-to-time because I was involved in a pool. The bet was to see how long it would take you to return. I was a little over a month early with my projection.
It looks like this blog is ramping up the same as before: look for things and spin them to the negative as much as possible. Sort of like blogging's Fox News for republicans. The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!
To 3:30 pm:
Is the grass really greener? Doesn't sound like it. I'm still with Gannett and happy to have a job. Plus, my boss and my boss's boss do care about me a a person. Imagine that!
And it begins....great to have the bitching back (not really). It's amazing that people take the time to complain - it's kind of like a tv show that you don't like....don't freaking watch it!
The latest witch hunt is on in Detroit! Two higher ups in Ad management were dismissed recently. Word is performance issues were the reason for at least one but mysteriously duties were consolidated in both cases...hmmmmm.
Here is part of a comment posted today by Anonymous@10:22 a.m.; I've edited out information identifying an individual employee:
Corporate types show up in Cherry Hill, everyone gets tense (everyone hopes they finally came to there senses and are ready to remove that waste of space XXXXXXX). Then they float out and all the top people at Cherry Hill say is things went well, but they can't talk about it. And the deplorable morale takes yet another hit. Please get rid of XXXXXX.
Word around here is that you've been working on an explosive story about Gannett. I guess newspapers don't have a vested interest in reporting on their own company.
Good luck with the future endeavors. We'll be watching.
I agree with 9:23 PM; since you're departure I've found that I am less stressed about the state of my job and my industry. Perhaps ignorance is bliss, or perhaps we can only take so many "bad news" items when we work in the trenches.
Jim, please consider balancing your coverage -- I know that individuals at Gannett produce some great journalism. Please, please, please do not focus only on the doom and gloom.
I've never stopped being interested in the terrific work going on in all divisions of Gannett. My challenge is to find ways to more effectively encourage this blog's readers to point me to examples. As always, your suggestions are most welcome!
I hate to hear what the corporate higher-ups are doing at the Detroit Free Press. To see Detroit is to take a tour of the riuns of what was once the Great America. I don't know what they expect. Maybe the staff of the paper is to rebuild the Motor City brick-by-brick. But if Gannett sends you to Detroit think of it as an eposide of the old 1960' - 70's show "Mission Impossible."
I've always thought that if you want balance, you can read this blog and then read the company's version (or the press releases). Keep up the great work please Jim. I've so missed reading this blog. Glad you're back.
What's on your mind today?

ReplyDeleteis it really going to happen?
I don't have any additional information, although I'd like to get it. Anyone else out there have more details?
ReplyDeleteA question: Do the new ad-production centers in Des Moines and Indianapolis mean the company is ending its contract with offshorer 2AdPro? Why?
ReplyDeleteJust saying "welcome Back" Jim. Good to have you back.
ReplyDeleteJim look into the article on Editor & Publisher entitled "Another Domestic Ad-production Outsourcer Opens" Published October 28, 2009
ReplyDeleteLooks like Gannett is going to try American Outsourcing this time...there called Outsourcing USA located in Dallas, PA.

ReplyDeleteWhat exactly is left at GCI Corporate Accounting in Crystal Palace - a skeleton crew? Understand that a large majority of staff is gone.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you back, Jim

ReplyDelete8:11 a.m.: Thank you for asking. Sparky is very, very well.
ReplyDeleteit is the 19th and the last post was 2 days ago. is this a blog or what? are there postings not yet released or is this thing doa yet again? how lame.
ReplyDelete10:17 a.m.: You may have missed comments in the other posts. Plus, it looks like we're already seeing effects of the holiday slowdown.

ReplyDeleteThere you go again - it's OUR job to point you in the right direction. Then what do we need you for?
ReplyDeleteI agree with 5:01 pm 110%. I don't think you can balance your coverage because it doesn't suit your interests.
