  2. Your videos just keep getting better and better.

Did you get the Freedom Forum document, too?

  3. 6:57 pm: I'm still trying to figure that out.

  4. Watch the length of the music you sample there Jimbo, or the RIAA is going to sue your hinder for not paying them off.

I mean, LICENSING the music. My bad.

Not sure if Brenda Lee has been dead long enough yet not to make a difference, but the arrangement or recording might be copyrighted separately.

    Sorry.

  5. Even though I bought that track on iTunes, just for this video?

  6. Jim, the RIAA makes Gannett look like the Easter Bunny. Evil bastards!

  7. Guidestar is showing the 2007 return for Freedom Forum, Inc. in Laurel, Md. Why are there two different entities?

  8. You are great! You made me laugh on a difficult day.

  9. Yeah, Jim, you might want to be careful. The use of any music protected by a copyright is dangerous. I'm not being critical; I love this blog. I'm just saying so you know. It's one of the things the Gannett video crew teaches during convergence training.

You can use the instrumental music on this site, as long as you credit it. There are some Christmas songs, too: http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

  10. Perhaps I've been lulled into doing this because iMovie makes it so easy to drag-and-paste songs from iTunes into a video file.

  11. Jim, you rock (around the clock). First of all, great content. Second, great presentation, as they say: the type superimposed on the video -- and the music! You're a natural at this -- were you by any chance a thespian in high school or college?? Anyway, thanks.

  12. Personal use is ok, commercial use makes them go bazonkers. And because you're raking in the dough here, they'd go after that huge pot of easy cash, plus treble damages.

At most you'd probably be on the hook for a grand for every viewing though. :(

I wish I didn't have to be a downer, but there's trolls out there who would want to mess with ya, Jim. I'd reedit the video.

  13. So what do you consider fair compensation for someone running a $450 million operation?

The pay envy on display here and throughout the blog comments gets pretty old.

  14. So sorry. Put on your Bose audio-canceling headphones and go sit in your Rolls until we're done.

  15. @5:23 Commercial use makes them go bazonkers, but so also does any use that infringes on copyright; this is why the DMCA is written as it is, so the burden of proof is shifted heavily upon the accused.

Jim: A good place to start reading is an excellent post by Brad Templeton from way back in the day: point 2 applies to you:

  16. Well, I'll always have my Teletype sound effect -- plus, my kazoo!

  17. I've now re-edited and re-posted this video to remove the "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree'' track.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
