That is the toll-free number for reporting suspected ethics violations involving Gannett, according to the Ethics Policy: "If you wish to report a violation or possible violations, please feel free to write, e-mail or call Barbara W. Wall (left), the Company’s Ethics Officer, at bwall@gannett.com (or 703-854-6000); or call 800-234-4206, the phone mail hotline number that has been established for this purpose (from the United Kingdom, the hotline number can be reached by dialing free 0-808-234-8157). There is no need to identify yourself, if you prefer not to do so. All reports will be treated in confidence except as necessary to conduct investigations."
I have just e-mailed the following note to Barbara Wall, with a copy to Tara Connell:
ReplyDeleteSubject: I am a Gannett shareholder -- and I am asking that you examine this
Barbara:
Please show me that you are still an honorable woman, by looking into this.

Don't get too excited about dialing that number. GCI may talk the talk, publish phone numbers and pretty ethics policies, but when it comes to actually doing anything about serious complaints, heads go in the sand. If you've never been the target of the machinations of 360 degree pressure collusion that can squeeze you into resigning, then you don't know Gannett. One of the great ironies (if not the biggest) of this company is its flat out rejection of living the principles that its newspapers are supposed to espouse. Just like the CEO, executives at this company believe they are above the law. Integrity, ethics and taking care of employees have no place here.
ReplyDeleteUmmm Jim -
ReplyDeleteYou asked Barbara to look into "this" but you didn't specify what "this" is. (Or at least not in your post)
11:25 pm: You are correct in this specific way: I did not detail my concerns in this post.
ReplyDeleteIsn't she their liability attorney? when i worked their, i remember them running things by her... seems unlikely she'd be an ombudswoman so much as CYA for the company.
