  1. Jim, I think there is a lot to be said about a paper's place in the community, especially one like the Poughkeepsie Journal that goes back to the early days of our country. I think most young people can understand that.

And that is what is so disheartening about what we are going through right now. Many of us at the Journal feel that we are being killed through a thousand cuts, that the good work we have done in the past — and the history that this paper has — is completely unimportant so long as Gannett maintains its profit margin.

By and large, we have embraced the evolution of our industry to a web-based product. We are, after all, part of an area that is rich in technological history, too.

I believe we feel that there is room for a quality print product and a quality web product, but we cannot sustain either if we are constantly bombarded by layoffs.

I want to believe the publisher and other higher-ups at the paper are as distressed about the impending 10 percent cuts as the rest of us.

That would only leave the conclusion that those running the corporation just doesn't give a damn.

  2. The people running this comapny are trying to kill the print product. They are going to be successful.

  3. What a bunch of crappy sports reports this weekend. Can you people get some qualified people to cover the high schools in State Championship action?

Or will I have to start buying the Record or Freeman.
If it doesn't improve soon, I'm canceling my subscription. Who wrote these stories and where are the pictures?

And by the way, where is the news in this newspaper?

Shhhh. Don't tell them that when print finally tanks more, there won't be anything left of Gannett!

  5. I'm surprised people subscribe to the PoJo at all. The product has deteriorated so drastically in the last year and a half, it's scary. And it will only get worse once they start printing in Westchester. There's no quality, no journalism, no morale left at the PoJo. Bad management has taken its toll.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
