Toto, I've a feeling we're not in McLean anymore!

Regarding a recent Gannett Blog TV episode aimed at my estimated 500 gay readers, plus assorted other Judy Garland fans who also love newspapers, Anonymous@9:34 p.m. commented yesterday:

"I am sure there are many people on this blog with different sexual persuasions, but many people do not choose to expose them. Why (don't) you stick with the issue at hand and report on Gannett. I paid good money to you to support your efforts, and I am disappointed with the negative tone of your so-called reporting. Please Jim, clean it up and earn the reputation you deserve."

Let's put this in context, using my favorite tool: hard data! Including this one, I've published 1,887 posts since this blog's start. Here are the number of those posts mentioning the word:
  • Gannett: 1,204 (64% of all)
  • My domestic partner, Sparky: 50 (2.6%)
  • Gay or homosexual: 21 (1.1%)
  • Judy Garland: 1 -- and this is it! (0.05%)
Besides, what's not to love about a guy named Sparky?!

  1. Sorry Jim, the first scan through this post I thought you were saying Sparky made up 2.6% of your domestic partners.

Then I had to read again to find out how you got away with 37 other domestic partners....

  2. I loved the Dorothy video.
But you really do need to work on the nervous lip smacking thing as you get ready to speak ...
Your video personna is great once you get going.

It's your blog. Say what you want.
Nobody's asking anybody to read anything they don't like. Let them stay away, they're not adding anything here anyway.

  4. I love that I learned a new phrase. Was it "Friend of Dorothy"? I wasn't privy to the meaning of that, and felt like I have expanded my horizons.

  5. Oh, good grief. Bigots, you don't have to read this blog. Keep it up, Jim.

  6. It's a true journalist who can back things up with statistics. Keep up the great work.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
