  4. Me, I'm just going over my finances and wondering when we will see another round of layoffs. Earlier blog entries predicted some time in October or November. Anyone got any info on this?

  5. And this from Hawaii...............

    From www.ilind.net

With Gannett stock plunging briefly below $12 per share Friday, and
a Goldman Sachs analyst predicting continued “record declines” in ad spending over the next year, the Honolulu Advertiser has announced another round of buyouts coupled with wage and benefit cutbacks, as well as structural changes that could result in further layoffs of union members.

According to the Hawaii Newspaper Guild:
The company proposed that bargaining unit employees accept dozens of changes in the editorial, production and circulation departments that could result in layoffs of additional union and non-union employees. The proposals include the expanded use of part-time workers, outsourcing of some current bargaining unit work, and a 40-hour work week.
Company spokesperson John Jaske said the company next week will announce details of a new round of voluntary layoffs. Some employees will be offered up to 52 weeks of pay and up to a year of health coverage if they voluntarily leave the company, he said.

In typical times, Gannett’s chain of local newspapers is considered more immune from the national economy. But according to AP, Mark Wienkes of Goldman Sachs is predicting “local ad spending will see a steeper drop than national ads and advises investors to stay away for now from ad-related stocks.”

  8. To the COWARD, at 5:20(what happen to your Gannettblogsuck"s blog), who does not give his name. My punctuation, was good enough to write the story, that destroyed, Mike Tyson career, or forced, Oprah, to close her book club for two years.

  9. 4:24pm: so that's a loss of 625 readers. whats your point? just wait until they finish restructuring the Courier News as they move into their new building. the rest will finish their merge into the Home News Tribune. and still the same lackluster, useless managers will be in place to continue to screw up whats left of that rag.

  10. And for all those interested in pushing mobile content - this item today from Techdirt:

Verizon Wireless Massively Raises Rates For Text Messaging Services
    from the margins?--you-have-no-margins? dept

It's no surprise that some things may be getting more expensive these days, especially as companies start dealing with the fallout from the financial crisis -- but it appears that some are going a bit overboard. There's a bit of an uproar among some, as Verizon Wireless is slapping a surprising 3-cents-per-text-message fee on top of every mobile terminated text message. That basically affects any company that provides some sort of SMS notification system or content service, massively increasing prices. As some have noted, most of those services bought text messages in bulk, where it cost around 1 cent per message. That means the cost of sending text messages just quadrupled. If you're already worried about the economy and working on tight margins, that could certainly put some companies out of business entirely.
