News blogs: History's first draft vs. first notes

If journalism produces the first rough draft of history, then news bloggers like me produce the first rough notes -- for the first draft of history. (That's one reason why you see me frequently use tentative phrasing -- reportedly, possibly, might, etc. -- in posts like this.)
