Election tally: GCI papers mostly endorse Obama
My list of Gannett presidential endorsements is heavily tilted toward Democratic Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois vs. Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona. Newspaper editorial boards published another round of endorsements yesterday; my growing list now includes about a third of Gannett's papers. Is yours represented?

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Jim: Your tally is behind the times. Green Bay endorsed McCain on Friday.

Thanks! I've now added Green Bay to my list.
ReplyDeleteThe Springfield News-leader refuses to endorse a presidential candidate.
ReplyDeleteMy extremely small community paper is about to pick McCain, but most people in the newsroom hate that we endorse at all. The majority of the members on the board are news staff members - they directly contribute to the local content of the paper. Not to mention that most hotly contested elections almost always come down to one news staff members deciding vote ... Not a good situation, in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteI just deleted a comment that was not focused sharply on Gannett.
ReplyDeleteThe Louisville Courier-Journal endorses Obama in this Sunday's edition.

ReplyDeleteLink for the Leaf-Chronicle's endorsement story.
Poughkeepsie Journal endorses Obama in Sunday's paper.
ReplyDeleteFlorida Today backs Obama, like it would surprise anyone. They'll slam anybody with little or no experience...unless it's a Democrat. Doesn't help sales in a Republican county.
ReplyDeleteCourier-News, Home News Tribune and Courier Post all endorse Obama today. Could not find presidential endorsements on the Daily Record or Asbury Park op-ed Web pages.
ReplyDelete11:03 again... Apparently APP endorsed early - Obama -- last Sunday. One blog writes "World Turned Upside Down - Asbury Park Press endorses a Democrat.''
ReplyDeleteIndianapolis: No endorsement

I'd be curious to know from the "no endorsement" locations: Do your paper's endorsements typically lean Republican or Democratic? Indy, I know, has been quite conservative in the past.
ReplyDeleteunder previous owner, indystar was far-right-wing republican. now it's middle of the road. but a nonendorsement is chickenshit, since they endorsed in everything else but dogcather.
ReplyDeleteWhat can you expect? Montgomery Aggrevator has now endorsed O"bama".
ReplyDeleteThe Journal and Courier [Lafayette, IN] endorsed Obama on Sunday. Probably a first since FDR.
ReplyDeleteStevens Point Journal (WI): Obama

The Tennessean endorsed Obama and all Democrats (with two exceptions) running in the state legislature. I think most wouldn't mind the endorsements if the paper ACTUALLY covered the legislature or the races.

The News-Press in Fort Myers, Fla. bravely endorses neither.
ReplyDeleteHats off to those that chose not to endorse!
ReplyDeleteAs for majority picking Obama --- What the hell did you expect?
What I find ironic is that an industry that increasingly has to admit to its own failure in leadership and vision – notwithstanding Gannett’s announcement to fire 10% more, still has the courage to expect their readers to trust their judgment in their pick for a presidential candidate.
