Where you work: Most are current employees

That's according to new findings from my ongoing "Where do you work survey," near the top of the blue sidebar, right. Although far from super-duper scientific, the survey now taken by more than 1,800 Gannett Blog readers offers a glimpse at where you're coming from:
  • Gannett Corporate HQ: 4%
  • A Gannett newsroom: 33%
  • Gannett, but not a newsroom: 26%
  • I'm an ex-Gannettoid: 27%
  • Never worked for Gannett: 7%
Note: figures don't total 100 because of rounding.

  1. Jim, you don't have a category for probably hundreds of journalists like me: Someone who worked for Gannett after it took over our 100-year-old newspaper, but never bought in to the (then) Reston Regurgitation of printing neighborhood crap no one would read (Meet Your Teacher, Meet Your Neighbor, Real People, Real News), contrived labels (Moments in Life)for routine features, hiring underqualified people to satisfy minority quotas, promoting minorities above their experience to meet head-count goals, and sitting through hours of "strategic" planning, empowerment "training," ad infinitum. And relentlessly being reminded that despite our 25 to 30 years experience in newspapers, we didn't know anything about journalism until Gannett shined its light upon us. While I agonize over the future of the newspaper industry, and hate to witness what is becoming of a once-proud profession, I can muster no sympathy for Gannett's Gestapo approach to its employees. It's a shame so many of the young journalists visiting this blog never had the opportunity to experience newspapers before Gannett began ruining them.

  2. The newsroom (I dare not say where)is quiet as a church mouse. You may hear someone try and make a joke about the situation once in awhile, but deep down we're all walking around with a huge knot in our stomachs.

At 3 a.m. I woke up from a nightmare where a bunch of BIG hawks were scoping out little birds to devour. I was one of the little birds, hiding in a tree. I couldn't go back to sleep. Thanks Gannett!

So here we are about to face another day of feeling like someone has a strangle-hold on your lungs as they slowly squeeze out the air and suck the life from your body.

  3. i'm intrigued by the 7% who have never worked for a Gannett paper. Why are they here?

this is hardly light reading for anyone not connected to 'the firm' ...

  4. @4:39 am: Those 7% include stock analysts, shareholders, employees of competing companies, etc.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
