    Did someone kidnip Jim? Can't believe after all this buildup to today's USA Today meeting that there is nothing about it here. Maybe the meeting was a total dud or maybe there is a mushroom cloud over McLean, Va. Anyone have any news about what they are doing or saying at USA Today this morning?

    Hey! Work for (or recently not working for) a NJ paper? Trying to get a more local blog going at http://depressd.blogspot.com/ Take no offense Jim! We are totally copying your idea here, but this co. is so large (for now) that it's sometimes hard to find site-specific info. There's not much on this NJ blog but let's change that. Start blogging NJ!

    For those of you who've asked about today's companywide USA Today staff meeting: Apparently, there was no big news announced by Publisher Craig Moon. I just left the following comment on the USAT post, which is here: http://tinyurl.com/68nxw9

    Here's my new comment on that post: "I hear Moon may have hinted at a single-copy price increase, and that he didn't rule out layoffs in the future. Can anyone comment?"

    No breaking news. Redding does a good job of summarizing recent cutbacks and gaffes. Redding also said in an article on The Ville Voice blog that "It all adds up to something scary — a no-win business model, with a management philosophy of constantly searching for ways to cut costs. But it’s our only daily newspaper and it’s not going anywhere - it just won’t ever again be the paper it used to be."

    Redding's quote is the most telling part of either of his articles.

    I would question though his point that the paper "isn't going anywhere." Five, 10 years from now I'd argue that it won't be where it is today. The question is, will that be because it migrates online or goes away because of corporate mismanagement?

    If so, that would explain the silence over at Jim's thread about the USAT staff meeting today. As of 5:42 p.m. ET, nobody has said A WORD of what was said at the meeting . . . a meeting in which, another source of Jim's has already said, nothing big happened.

    Gannett, used to own, a private detective firm> Actually a security firm, with the largest private group, second largest in the country, of investigator in the country.The largest is the FBI. Do you want to see the file they have on me> Naw, it is so funny and downright wrong info. If I was Gannett, pretend power people, I would be more worry not about inside leaks, but from what others detectives, from some very powerful people and groups, are getting about Gannett people. I wonder, who they are leaking their info to?

    The reason no one is posting what was said at the USAT meeting is because nothing very newsworthy happened there.

    For all the ominous buildup on this blog, it was said for weeks that this was just a routine staff meeting and that is what it ended up being.

    This blog is valuable in many ways, but good newspeople know when it is worthwhile to post something and when it is simply a case of venting.

    When news happens, people will post here. No one is being scared away. But perpetuating this edgy doom machine is not what professionals do.

    In the absence of real news.
