A city known for Gaudi has even more to offer

Part of an occasional series about Ibiza and the surrounding region.

Antonin Gaudi is the most famous architect in Barcelona's Modernist movement; buildings like his Casa Batlló apartments draw tourists from around the world. But there are plenty of other wonderful examples of architecture in the city. We saw these two buildings during a walk yesterday afternoon along Passeig de Gracia.

Stained-glass bay windows like these are quite common.

Worth visiting
Barcelona is a magnificent city for tourists who like to walk. It's spic-and-span clean. The sidewalks are broad, and well-furnished with benches. There are cafes everywhere. And yesterday, with the weather a bit cooler than usual, it felt almost like fall.

  1. no place like Barcelona and the Ramblas and the Dr. Seuss architecture. Love it. The cathedral is mind-blowing. Also fun to go down to the harbor with the Columbus status and see where Don Quijote's "invasion" happened

  2. Try to get to the El Encants flea market while you're there. I hope it still rocks! I got some cool vintage jewelry and an Engelbert Humperdink 45 while I was there!

  3. That's great that you've been able to appreciate some of the other amazing buildings in Barcelona without being blinded by Gaudi - don0t get me wrong, he was a genius (and responsible for 8 of te 9 UNESCO World Heratige sites that Barcelona boasts), but there is so much more of offer!

I always say to people, even if you have no interest in architecture, you cannot fail to be impressed by some of the creation Barcelona throws up!

    Great blog!

  4. Barcelona is full of wonderful life. I remember going to bed at 1 a.m. (that's early! in Barcelona) and witnessing a party unfold in an apartment across from my fourth-floor hotel room right off La Rambla. I looked out the window at 6 a.m. and partiers were still slowdancing.
    Crema cataluna! Yum.
    Bless this blog!
Glad you are enjoying your Spanish summer, Jim.
And it is a super clean city.
I remember crews in green and yellow slickers washing down the streets with hoses from small tankers at 3 a.m.
    Paella!
