Tip: Phoenix lays off 50 in circulation, elsewhere

In an e-mail, a Gannett Blog reader says: "The Arizona Republic laid off approximately 50 more employees a couple days ago. Apparently, it was throughout the organization. I'm only aware of the circulation department cuts, but it appears all the managers running the Circulation Distribution Centers were released. Some transportation department employees were also given their walking papers, while others in circulation were demoted. This definitely wasn't a buyout, but those involved did receive a severance package."

  1. This was an unsubstantiated report posted by a blogger who hates newspapers. Within about 15 minutes of posting the information -- and after being taken to task by a reader -- the entry was pulled from the blog.

  2. Yeah, that guy really hates the Republic, often makes errors in his blog "reporting" and never apologizes. It is scary to think that if/when newspapers die, that people like him will be where readers go for "news." He is guilty of the very same bias he criticizes the Republic for. And he rarely admits his mistakes.

  5. Anon 128, You so funneee! Maybe you can be a blogger when you get laid off. At least you wouldn't need any command of English, spelling, syntax or any other formal education.

  8. These are no bad people, just very bad managers. In many cases coming from smaller newspapers and still attached to the arrogance of a different time and place. They're out of touch with today's business and instead of going out of their way to connect with people internally and externally, they build teams around themselves to support their ego. In the toughest of business conditions, The Arizona Republic continues to distance itself from clients and readers. There's no business model where this approach works. There's a lot of meetings taking place with a lot of managers claiming to know what's going on outside their walls without ever venturing outside their office or ego.

  10. Does anybody know what the Marketing Department has accomplished under the current VP who will apparently take over the whole paper as 8:09 mentioned and is probably correct? It's the one department no other department likes working with. They're never on time, don't seem to be in touch and nobody can determine how they're held accountable. The current VP oversees several "magazines" and I don't think they're doing very well. Free publications under her are... not doing very well either. They sure love online although they're revenues are apparently way down. This is a relatively large department that doesn't sell advertising, doesn't deliver the paper, has problems putting partnerships together and doesn't sell papers yet this department seems to have a hand in many departments without an honest clue or mutual accountability.

  11. To answer your your question anon 11:29 -- precisely diddly over squat. Seriously.

We've endured several failed magazines, botched partnerships and then there's the clumsy (being nice) custom publishing department chock full of ineffective prima donnas.

But according to senior management, the fearless leader of the Market Development department (Marketing, magazines and custom publishing) is performing wonderfully. Pass the kool aid please... Or better yet, give her ANOTHER Gannett president's ring.
