Reader: Sell Gannett TV stations, East Coast papers

Regarding my post about a bad day looming ahead for Gannett's stock, a reader writes in a new comment: "After writing down $3 billion, if someone were to come in and purchase a big chunk of the company at $15/share, they could make a killing. Even if they were leveraged to the hilt, the money is still there. Break up the company and sell the broadcast properties or licenses, dump Newsquest, fire sale the East Coast properties for their real estate, and they could cover their leverage. Oh, and dump the Crystal Palace in McLean, Va."

  1. Sell any newspaper performing at less than half last year's expectations. Don't keep cutting to make quarterly profit marks. Lop off low performing quadrants of company to raise overall profitability. Keep adding non-daily products to diversify. Focus on delivering lights-out local hard news with Nation and World report. Leverage visual storytelling assets on all platforms. Get more advertising reps on the street. Put more value into online and print products for consumers. How? Find ways to add consumer, environmental and educational components to hard core newspaper efforts. Investment in digital right way to go, but don't build false expectations of instant fix. Keep talking about the long haul. There are a bunch of readers who wish they could get their paper, but can't because their locations have been cut from circ. Makes business sense to review, but that is not a growth strategy. Some may pay higher prices to get it.

  2. Assholes. None of them has had an original thought in years. It's not being stupid, just dumb.

Always behind the curve, years out of sync, pricing themselves out of business. Ego's so large, and little to no simplicity of basic investment strategy.

Buy, buy, and then collapse. Real smart. Why buy when you know that the bottom is not yet in sight.

Gannett stuck it up people's ass.
The local advertising community has passed. As has their employees. This has been waiting to happen for years.

  3. They are accountable. They are responsible for leadership. They get paid to make good decisions. Not to knee-jerk to Wall Street and to self-preservation.

There never was any justification for their monopoly actions and attitude. Employees have a grip.

  4. why would gannett want to sell the tv stations? they are not down as much this year (percent) compared to newspaper according to jim's charts he pulls from gannett. tv should be a nice source of income that isn't deteriorating at the rate of newspapers. just a thought....

  5. Whoa. Such hostility Anon @ 1:45.

Speaking of growing up ... your lack of maturity, in the profanity you use, is obvious.

Given the performance of Gannett's stock during the past 2.5 years, I'm guessing most of the people on this blog couldn't have done any worse than Craig Dubow during that time period. It doesn't take a genius to know what's wrong with this company. Doing what's right takes courage; and, well, we're still waiting, Craig and Gracia ...

  6. Hey 1:45 PM – Your usage of vulgarity, threatening tones and demeaning language to attack those who obviously don’t agree with your thoughts suggests that you attended the same leadership program that far too many of Gannett’s “certified assholes” went through.

If I were CEO, one of my first moves would be to rid the organization of bullies like you as this is arguably one of this company’s key legacy problems. And, if you’re looking for a dissertation here to explain the negative affects and damage that these behaviors create, then you’ve already proven my point that you and others like you need to go.

  8. What's the point of cursing? There are a lot of us who ARE working our asses off and still feel desperate about what's going on. It's not like we can't do both! This is the same kind of idiot who tells folks it's unpatriotic to be upset about the war in Iraq. Hope he feels as supportive when HE gets laid off.

  9. Find new jobs!!! Leave!!! Why would you stay here? LOSERS!

Overgrown, worn out journalists getting your asses kicked in by teenagers that blog better stories than you can fabricate.

  10. Too late to go backward. The bullies of the past have done their damage. Reckless disregard for a loyal employee base, and a tarnished reputation. Its not about teenagers.

    The mousetrap changed...in part.

  11. Yeah, like anybody reads Gannett blogs. People click on news stories. The blogs and videos get virtually zero hits compared to stories, which are produced by experienced journalists.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones.
