Poynter blog: Next buyouts won't be so generous

Poynter Online Biz Blog author Rick Edmonds says you ought to strongly consider taking a buyout if you're one of the hundreds of journalists now eligible. "The next offer is unlikely to be as good as this one,'' he writes today. "The 2008 buyouts are typically less generous than those of three or four years ago. Many organizations are now on their third or fourth round of newsroom cuts. And few managers are saying anymore, this is it."

  1. Here's a question for any former Gannett folk who took buyouts:

When the buyout payments end, are you eligible for unemployment benefits? (If you don't mind mentioning the state where you are, that would help, because UC laws vary.)

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
