8:45 p.m., Ibiza time: In a beach forest

Part of an occasional series about Ibiza. We paused on the way home from Es Cavallet beach at Ses Salines.

  1. Jim, you are an inspiration. I too would like to spend a summer in Ibiza after I get cut loose by my employer (you-know-who). What advice do you have for me and your other envious readers?

  2. Thank you, @9:58 p.m. My advice is to plan ahead.

When I was 31, I got my first management job -- as business news editor at the now-shuttered Arkansas Gazette, then owned by Gannett. (Gannett closed that newspaper amid high losses in 1991.) The new job meant I could start saving a little money each week, which I did.

At the same time, I saw a lot of unhappy people in the Gazette's newsroom -- many in their 50s and early 60s, showing signs of career burnout. I worried that I would experience he same thing when I reached that age.

So, I scrimped and saved for 20 years, with a single goal in mind: I wanted the financial freedom to make a big career change -- if that became necessary.

Last year, USA Today offered me a buyout at a time when I was ready to start a new career. I took it on Jan. 11, 2008, when I was about to turn 51.

  3. Thanks, Jim. You're my hero. I too have been scrimping and saving. Last December I felt downright rich. Lately, not so much (though my portfolio is GCI-free).

But I'm making the big jump soon, one way or another. (A) Because I can, and (B) Journalism is no fun anymore. That's the heartbreaker.

I feel for the young ones joining the biz today. I hope somehow some way they get to experience the thrills and chills of real news gathering.

  4. I'm getting more optimistic about journalism's future as a result of keeping this blog. I can now better see how First Amendment journalism can thrive online.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
