Gannett newspapers clean up in APME awards

The Detroit Free Press won the Associated Press Managing Editor's Public Service award for its excellent investigation, showing that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff lied under oath in a costly lawsuit against the city. And The News Journal of Wilmington, Del., won for a series of stories revealing patient abuse, rape and assaults, and felons working as doctors and attendants, at Delaware's only mental hospital.

  1. just like the band bravely playing as the titanic sank, good journalists keep doing their jobs despite the malfeasance and nonfeasance at the top that's sinking gannett. the employees deserve far better management.

  2. Detroit also won a handful of local Emmy awards for their multimedia projects and video. They're consistently doing outstanding work. I wish all Gannett papers were given proportionally equal resources to excel in the types of quality journalism the Free Press does.

Hell... with all of those buyouts on the way, who knows how long Detroit will be able to hold on to those resources.

    Damn shame...

  3. To its credit, The Freep also deviates from the boring company Web template by displaying stories with some punch and local personality. At least somebody is doing some thinking there, rather than just buying the party line.

  4. Yo -- let's get real --

the Detroit people involved with those awards were KNIGHT-RIDDER hires --

    not Gannettoids.

Gad -- the gall of those Gannettoids.

(Someone FAX this to Gannett PR)
