My favorite treehouse-occupying-still-absurdly-well-compensated media mogul has been a persistent critic of President Bush and the Iraq War in his column -- one of the most high-profile within Gannett. So, I'm not surprised to see him going after more-than-likely Republican presidential nominee John McCain, in a column today about who really backs U.S. soldiers.
"'Support our troops' has been the mostly lip-service slogan of President Bush and his crowd ever since they made the mistake of invading Iraq,'' Neuharth writes. "Our new policy should be: Support our troops by bringing them home from Iraq, sooner rather than later. Then thank them properly when they complete their service with a paid-for college education."
Keep after 'em, Al!
As a Vietnam era vet who got out of the Navy in 1970 I used the GI bill to pay for a good chunk of my college education and to buy our first house with no money down after I graduated from college. I was not alone. Today is a different story. Al Neuharth is right. People serving in the military have earned and deserve special benefits, not the least of which is a college education.
