Like rubbernecking past a car wreck, I can't resist octogenarian retired CEO Al Neuharth's weekly column, every Friday in USA Today.
Today, Neuharth's writing on the occasion of his first grandchild gearing up for college. "The sweat-out finally ended this week,'' he says. "Thursday was the deadline for high school seniors to decide which college or university to attend."
Among those who made their pick: His granddaughter, Dani, of Loudoun County, Va., who chose one of those dastardly Ivy League schools -- Cornell University. And guess what? She's already got a rep on campus. Neuharth grand-père thoughtfully arranged for Cornell President David Skorton to provide one of those "other opinions" tacked on the end of each Neuharth column. How kewl is that!
"College is only the first step in what today must be life-long learning,'' Skorton is quoted as allegedly having said. "But, to start in a place you chose, after all, makes it special. Welcome, Dani!"
Now, there's a frosh who won't be getting special handling!
