9:35 p.m., San Francisco: Gay marriage ruling night

[Neon icon: Castro Theatre in the city's gay neighborhood]

Two unexpected forces collided tonight to create a street party now thundering below in my San Francisco neighborhood. In a decision with national repercussions, the state Supreme Court ruled earlier today that gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry in California. Meanwhile, we're having a freakishly warm night (anyone who's spent a summer here will understand how weird this is) -- drawing hundreds to Castro Street. It's like 80 degrees! We're wearing T-shirts and shorts! Amazing!
