Gannett shares surge 8%, closing near $28

The stock more than recovered the ground it lost yesterday: Shares closed today at $27.93, up $2.07, as newspaper stocks rose across the board after a first-quarter earnings report from E.W. Scripps.

Scripps newspaper division revenues were down. Not a stellar showing.
