Desperately, that is, because current Tennessean Editor and Chief Paper Thrower Mark Silverman makes once-legendary Editor Frank Sutherland (left) look good in comparison, says Nashville Scene. "I don't mean to pry,'' the weekly's Matt Pulle asks Sutherland today, "but do you ever read your old paper?''

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."

Rather sad that after Frank's illustrious Gannett career...he was a consistent ring winner...no comments on this post. How soon they forget.
ReplyDeleteWhat's happening at the Tennessean is the typical Silverman story arc: Silverman initially impresses some with his knowledge, giving people hope of improvements. Then, his evil -- and more dominant twin -- comes out at meetings and many other kinds of interactions. He ruthlessly carries out every Gannett corporate directive, regardless of whether it makes sense for the paper. He makes dumb personnel decisions and demonstrates poor news judgement. The staff gets demoralized. People start fleeing. Word of his mindless cruelty gets out. Then, people start missing his predecessor.
ReplyDeleteIn this case, people are not missing his DIRECT predecessor, EJ Mitchell. EJ of course was Silverman's protege, getting abused by Silverman and in the process learning how to abuse his underlings. EJ followed the same 'story arc', leaving people at the paper missing the one who came before EJ, which was Sutherland.
