Imagining Clark-Johnson's $50K retirement bash

Or $100,000! Who knows? She's not just any Gannettoid, after all. This is newspaper division chief and 40-year company lifer Sue Clark-Johnson, riding off into the Arizona sunset, this May. I'm imagining a beaucoup-bucks event. Like: Sending the jet to and from Phoenix to air-taxi Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and a delegation of business dignitaries -- all happy to see Clark-Johnson leave the company. But thank goodness, money is no problem these days: There's all that dough sloshing around the Corporate Tower.

Seriously: Can someone tell me whether a party is planned? Turned down? Already held? Use this link to e-mail your reply; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the sidebar, upper right. Or leave a note in the comments section, below.

  1. Don't count on Janet flying in. Arizona is broke too. Watson will send a card.

  2. Well if USA Today's 25th Anniversary is any indication of the budget for corporate parties don’t expect much. You think they would have spent a little more $$ on the people who put Gannett on the map. Instead they through a half ass company staff meeting in their lobby.

  3. Plus, didn't Corporate lose one of (maybe its only) on-staff event coordinator to a layoff in October?

  4. I thought they got rid of the jet? Maybe to fund Dubow's bonus and home security system?

  5. Jim, why are you so bitter? On the one hand you criticize the company for spending money, and on the other hand you criticize for not spending money.

Wouldn't you be happier if you just moved on with your life? Gannett is behind you, man; what good does it do you or anyone to hang on to all this anger?

  6. First, and without at all meaning to sound flip: I'm not bitter; I'm just better informed. And I expect many of my readers are, too.

That's the goal of this blog: to organize Gannett employees in a place where they can exchange information freely, without fear of retribution. It's no more complicated than the First Amendment.

Second, I believe you misunderstood my post on SCJ and any retirement party; my bad. I'm not advocating that the company spend more -- just the opposite!

  7. Keep up the good work, Jim. Many of us truly appreciate your efforts to give a long-needed place for Gannett employees (peons like myself included) to communicate openly about the company.

I'm beginning to wonder if someone at corporate has been given the responsibility of standing up for the man and murking the waters of this blog. There seems to be a common pattern to many of the e-mails defending Gannett and ridiculing this blog.

At any rate, Jim, know that many of us remain grateful for your efforts.

  8. Thank you. Compliments like that truly keep me going! (There are days when I feel like a punching bag.)

  9. No violins here Jim. At times you deserve a few hits. Blogs like this are open to anyone to communicate. Although you don't have "an axe to grind" have you ever posted anything on YOUR blog that is positive about Gannett? Or is it just that your sources are so stuck in the weeds that they cannot see what is going on in the world outside of their cubicle's?

  10. Truth be told, this isn't just "my" blog; its content is largely determined by you and all the other readers. My job, as I've mentioned a couple of times, is to be host and moderator of what I hope will be a lively and constructive conversation among employees, small shareholders and readers/viewers of Gannett's websites, newspapers and TV stations.

If people stop visiting this blog, then I'll stop keeping it.

I welcome tips from all readers -- that means you, too! -- about things I should write about. That includes all the good work that I know is going on throughout Gannett. I have invited management and editors to suggest examples of that good work -- most recently in this March 2 post: http://tinyurl.com/2taka8

Unfortunately, in the two weeks since I made that offer, I haven't received a single suggestion. Please remember: There's just one of me editing this blog. But there are 46,100 employees with eyes and ears, who can contribute specific suggestions for "positive" things to write about.

The offer is -- and always will be -- open to you and everyone else.

  11. yeah, SCJ will get one of those touchy feely cards like the ones the "key" execs get each year at Christmas with the name GARY WATSON stamped in!

  12. Would you please send an invitation to Susan Linsey and Cathy Davis and Don Stinson to attend? Leslie will start with the festivities!

  13. Here's the link to the FAA page that shows the aircraft registered to Gannett. They even have some other 'N' numbers reserved as they add more to the fleet. You can't make this stuff up!
