Ex-USATer ordered to pay fines in anthrax suit

Former USA Today reporter Toni Locy will have to start paying hundreds, then thousands of dollars in fines, out of her own pocket, for refusing to reveal sources in her anthrax stories to a federal court, The Wall Street Journal says today. Locy's case is unusual in that Judge Reggie Walton has refused to let Gannett pay the contempt fines. "The judge, in fact, said she couldn't get financial help from anyone,'' the Journal (paid subscription required) says.

  1. Why doesn't USA Today just "hire" her as a consultant and compensate her accordingly?

  2. I'm pretty sure the judge would see around that sort of scheme -- and the plantiff's attorneys would definitely be on the lookout for something like that, too.

  3. Did Gannett even offer to pay, or assist in paying, the fines?

  4. I suspect the paper's top editor, Ken Paulson, would have pushed Gannett to do that. But whether the company would agree to write, essentially, a blank check is another matter. In any case, the judge wouldn't allow it.

Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
