Detroit Free Press Editor Paul Anger has rejected charges by embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick that the paper obtained text messages illegally -- messages that suggested Kilpatrick lied under oath about having an affair with then-Chief of Staff Christine Beatty.
In a new story, The New York Times says: "The Free Press has not explained how it obtained text of 14,000 messages on Ms. Beatty’s pager from parts of 2002 and 2003, but Paul Anger, the editor, denied any illegal act. 'The Free Press has no agenda other than getting to the truth,' Anger wrote in an e-mail."
In fresh revelations in the case, the Freep reports today on details of a controversial settlement in the case: "This is the tale behind that deal, one that can now be told in full with the release Wednesday of the last batch of secret settlement records. They show, as never before, how Kilpatrick and lawyers on the city's defense team embarked on an ill-fated scheme to conceal the damaging text messages from public view."
