Does your paper have a chief digital officer?

As Gannett elevates PointRoll CEO Chris Saridakis to the new and powerful role of GCI's chief digital officer, I wonder who is most responsible for digital strategy at your newspaper. Please answer that question in the poll box at the top of the blue sidebar, right.

  1. Why does the poll on chief digital officers not have "online executive" as an option, or at least an option for "other"? At Gannett newspapers large and small, there is typically a local director or VP over digital strategy/operations/product development, and this person works collaboratively and cooperatively under the publisher, with the local Online Operating Committee and with the other executives (usually of equal rank) such as the top editor, market development director/vp, advertising director/vp, etc. Gannett has used this structure for nearly a decade so not being familiar with it is a pretty big oversight for a site that covers Gannett. Only in relatively rare cases is the chief digital role occupied by, for example, the head of IT or another newsroom staffer.

  3. At small newspapers, they have the body count to be able to staff all those positions? Wow, no wonder the company is losing money.
