Holidaze: A way overly roasted chestnut

Holidays bring big papers, no news -- and really dopey story ideas from editors desperate to fill the newspaper. But, hey: 'tis the season, right?

  • Newspaper: USA Today
  • Headline: Five stars tell how and why they give back
  • The lede: "The holidays mean time for tinsel, trees and charity. Five stars reveal their favorite causes and what they do to help."
  • Mitigating Factor: It could have been 10 stars.

Was it the assignment to spend New Year's Eve with a lonely security guard -- and live-blog the experience? Use this link to e-mail your worst holiday story assignments. See Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the sidebar, upper right. Or leave a note in the comments section, below.

Jim says: "Proceed with caution; this is a free-for-all comment zone. I try to correct or clarify incorrect information. But I can't catch everything. Please keep your posts focused on Gannett and media-related subjects. Note that I occasionally review comments in advance, to reject inappropriate ones. And I ignore hostile posters, and recommend you do, too."
